Just got caught snooping! So embarrassed!

I had access to something that had all of my colleagues salaries on it and I just got caught looking at a colleague's salary. I tried to pretend like I wasn't but we both know that I was. I'm so embarrassed. Ugh

That's what you get for being so nosy.

I've always worked in govt jobs where pretty much everyone knows what everyone makes.

OP here. Ok, looking for things to make me feel better, not worse. I already feel terrible.

I didn't get caught, but I felt terrible after I snooped because I discovered I made so much less than the males in the office. I was really angry for a long time. Still at the job, though. Sigh.

Keeping salaries secret benefits managers, not employees. We should all be publicizing our salaries as widely as we can, to break down those inequalities that persist from less enlightened times.

Say nothing. This too shall pass.

we should be making our salaries public to the most detailed degree like athletes' salaries are.

I'm curious! Does the colleague make more, less or the same as you?

If I found someone looking at my salary, I don't think I would be that upset. Although I would be very curious about that person's salary.

He makes more, but has been here longer. I was really just curious about where my salary had the potential to go. He knows how much I make because he was on my hiring committee. But we're really good friends and that's why I'm even more ashamed and embarrassed.

I guess what I'm most ashamed of is the breach of trust.
