We just put mulch in the yard. I would like to plant Perennials using seeds. Just wondering whether this would work. Can the seeds grow through the mulch so would I have to push some mulch around the area where the seeds are planted. Gardening 101 here!
Most plants will have no problem pushing through an inch or two of mulch. Some seeds have more stringent requirements regarding temp & soil condition, etc but most can be directly sown into the garden and will do fine. Some blooming plants require a growing season before the flowers set; so you'll have mass and foliage this year, and flowers next. Have fun!
I always plant my seeds in potting mix/soil in containers until they are big enough to transplant. I follow the directions on the package. So if the package says plant 1/4 inch in the soil, I do that. Each seed is different, but will get a better start if you don't just broadcast them, but actually know where the seeds are and take care to get enough water, soil and light for the seedling.
