Making your own sourdough starter

If you have done it around here, how hard was it and how did the bread taste?

I would think the humidity might make it harder to make the starter - more likely to spoil may e. I've done it in California (many years ago) and the starter worked out fine. As I recall the flavor was much more subtle than commercial sourdough a which have other ingredients to enhance the sour flavor.
