That said, there is no question that BASIS kids do really well on the test. In fact, they have the top scores of any middle school in DC.

Here are the results for 8th grade for the latest CAPE testing. This is after kids have been at schools such as BASIS, Deal, and Hardy for several years.

ELA

BASIS 84.4
Deal 81
Latin 2nd 72.4
Oyster 69.9
Latin Cooper 66
Hardy 65.9
S-H 63
DCI 58.1

Math

BASIS 78.5
Deal 64
Latin 2nd 63.3
Oyster 63
Hardy 50
Latin Cooper 41.5
DCI 41
S-H 31.3

I do not believe this for a second given the types of kids and families at BASIS.

Also, you must be new here. The 8th grade math results are the least meaningful. BASIS has 8th graders take 8th grade math even though they're on to more advanced math; other schools don't, so 8th grade CAPE math takers tend to be the 8th graders who are worst at math. Do these numbers exclude the advance math takers? Because, if so, they'd be even less meaningful. Basically it would be every 8th grader at BASIS vs all the kids who were specifically worst at math at the other schools.

That is totally wrong. You have to love posters who insult others when they themselves are ignorant.

The whole 8th grade takes these tests at the listed schools.

For instance, just look at the numbers of kids who took the 8th grade CAPE test. For instance, for ELA, 90 took it at BASIS, 447 at Deal, and 98 at Latin 2nd. For math, 93 took it at BASIS, 450 took it at Deal, and 98 took it at Latin 2nd St.

In prior years, OSSE provided a breakdown of which course-based math test students took by grade level. In SY24-25, they reported the data differently, with math results reported only by grade level in middle school, and only by course in high school.

From the data dictionary: "Students in grades 7 and 8 who take high school course-based mathematics assessments are counted for performance reporting, as the high school course-based assessment takes the place of the required grade-level assessment."

However, there is a separate spreadsheet for "Advanced Middle School Math Results" that does report middle school math results by course. This spreadsheet has 33 middle schools that reported Algebra I or Geometry test scores.

So school test participation was actually as follows. Of 7th and 8th graders who took a math test : total # / Algebra I # / Geometry #

BASIS: 189/0/0
Deal: 941/DS/DS
Eliot-Hine: 261/29/17
Hardy: 374/DS/DS
Jefferson: 249/DS/n<10
John Francis: 161/20/0
Latin: 196/77/25
Latin Cooper: 183/64/28
MacFarland: 281/58/0
Oyster-Adams: DS/DS/n<10
Stuart Hobson: 276/56/0
Wells: 313/25/0

DS = data suppressed

Sample of schools above are those with at least 10 students taking, 50%+ meeting or exceeding on an advanced math test.

Deal has 941 7th and 8th graders? Is that a typo? And at those total numbers, why would Deal and Hardy have data suppressed?

Yeah that part is weird.

Also nice to see how has geometry students. I thought SH did but I guess not?

In SY24-25 Deal had 491 7th graders and 450 8th graders who took a math assessment.

Details about OSSE's data suppression policy is here: https://osse.dc.gov/page/student-privacy-and-data-suppression-policy-glance

Meeting/exceeding SY24-25:
-Deal Algebra I: 92%
-Deal Geometry: >95%
-Hardy Algebra I: 84%
-Hardy Geometry: >95%

From the policy, >95% means 21-100 students took Geometry at each school with only 0-4 who did not meet/exceed. Generally the policy is built such that you can't back out the performance of any specific student.

Nope. At Deal, you take the test for the class you’re in for sure.

Deal just teaches at grade level while Basis teaches a couple levels beyond.

What? Not at Deal but I’m sure they have math tracking and there are advance math classes.

CHEC and Sousa also had n<10 students who took the Geometry assessment

Basis definitely accelerates in math. But Deal also has 8th graders taking advanced algebra.
