I was recently at a dinner party and someone was describing this fabulous weekend event they went to at a ski resort where they were meeting with powerful politicians whose names you would know. her company paid for them to stay at a top hotel and they had a great time. I asked how the people were selected who go and meet with these politicians, and she said it’s because my company donates $100k or more. She was kind of bragging about her access and her beautiful weekend and all I could think was ew, that is effed up.

Uh, there are few gun manufacturers or junk food makers in this area, so you are not likely to see VPs posting on DCUM

What you will see are lobbyists who advance those products. If you read up thread, lobbyists are covered.

It's crazy to me how much more vitriol there is for SAHMs and teachers on this thread, but half of the people posting on here are corporate attorneys or married to one and no one says anything.

I've been a teacher, a corporate lawyer, and a SAHM. The only one that made me feel like I was actively working to make the world a worse place was corporate lawyer, obviously. It's not that everything you do is terrible. The vast majority of it feels neutral, boring, and benign. That's what's insidious. But you're participating in this massive system where a bunch of people just push paper around in a circle so that everything worthwhile can be more expensive and be harder to access for most people, and a very tiny percentage of the population can live like kings. It's actually messed up.

I know lots of corporate lawyers and I don't judge them personally. I know how it happens and how you justify your work to yourself (and how nice the money is even as the hours and culture often suck). But it is so weird to see so many people on DCUM acting like teachers and SAHMs are these awful scourges of society when I know exactly what so many of you do for work and it's a net negative. Sorry.

I don't think SAHMs are an awful scourge of society by any means. But I can't fathom why they would post on a thread specifically asking about jobs. I don't post on threads about my experience as a nuclear physicist because I'm not a nuclear physicist. Why would someone without a job post on a thread asking about their job?

Yeah exactly. No hate at all for SAH spouses but it’s specifically a thread about specific jobs!

My husband is a lobbyist for non profits. When he was unemployed at one point we started eyeing jobs for tobacco, McDonalds...he had the skills and the money would have been good, and he really needed a job, but we both thought it was pretty low!
