And, as for the pp asking about the benefit to liberals for rising crime rates..... Unintended consequences. Too many liberals seem to assume that the cops are the bad guys and that if we could only reduce or eliminate police, we would live in this utopia where everyone is kind to everyone else. That is simply fairy tale thinking. |
Thanks for sking! I work for myself and have zero employees because I started this venture during COVID and I’m seeing how it goes. if I wind up hiring, I will damn sure pay well because I want good people working for me and I want them to stick around for a while. Health insurance is crazy expensive, as we all know; I propose completely overhauling the current system and providing federal, universal access to healthcare for everyone (easier said than done!). Then people will be able to have more say over their lives and their time. Employers can get out of the health insurance game and can offer new and different benefits and will be able to attract a wider pool of employees. OP’s article says flat out that people aren’t interested because it’s a crappy job for $19 per hr. You have to go through intense training … then you get the graveyard shift off Van Dyke Ave for $19. Raise the pay, offer tuition reimbursement, offer flexible schedules, and good people will sign up.
|
In other words, you are a part of the problem you are demanding "WE" fix. When YOU are paying good wages and benefits to thousands of employees for their part time work then you will have room to talk. |
|
Agree that low pay, low respect and high risk are the problem here. Flexible schedules and so forth don’t really work with law enforcement but that’s not the recruitment issue. Anyone that thinks this is a Detroit problem is delusional. The LEO agencies around here are desperate to recruit and can’t fill their academy classes.
I think communities of color need to do a real recruitment effort to get the right kind of candidates into the academies. It would take a real mind shift and an effort by ministers, civil rights leaders, and other community leaders. |
The myth of the “just a few bad apples” cop has been forever busted in the cell phone camera era. There are far too many bad apples and an order of magnitude more that are complicit. They deserve exactly the respect that they are being given. |
There are many of us who disagree with you; but you'll either need to pay more for the high caliber, well-educated DCUM type of people you want to apply to be a cop, or live with less protection. |
|
My H does recruiting and the truth is nobody can pass the background check.
Top question try fail. Have you ever don’t an illegal drug? Yes, pot. Fail. Have you ever taken illegal prescription drugs? Yes, adder all Fail Have you ever, since you were 21, drank alcohol with a minor? Well yea, in college.., Fail |

^^ sorry typos
You get the point |
DP here. Do you seriously believe the facts are in doubt? If so, tell us these statements are false: - the police were called racists and have been demonized, - there are record numbers of police retirements and resignations in many departments, - recruitment of new officers is increasingly difficult in some departments, - crime is on the increase. If these statements are false, you must post data to refute them. |
Yep. You get what you get. So predictable. Maybe Lebron can handle this one. He has a lot of time on his hands. Lol |
The “low pay and high risk” has ALWAYS been a perfect of police work; what’s new is: - lack of respect after 2016 and again in 2020, and - threat of politically-motivated prosecutors jailing police for doing their jobs. |
Other places have opening now that pay more. If you have the ability to be a police officer, there are probably better opportunities out there for you. You feel it's just a lack of respect. If they increase that pay, you'll get those people. |
Actually it sounds like you’re part of the problem, since you don’t want to pay decent wages to your people and instead you’d rather let the taxpayers pick up the tab for their Medicaid and food stamps while you line your wallet. I bet you consider yourself a “heroic job creator” who pulled yourself up by your bootstraps, but in reality you’re just a greedy tax evader. And yes, WE collectively need to fix this mess we’re in. Do you prefer the status quo? |
I don’t employ anyone. I’m one of the workers. But im not blaming other people. |
There were also a record number of retirements from the NYPD in the year following 9/11. Some of it has to do with money earned in their last year of employment and how it affects their pensions going forward. This past year with the protests and the pandemic has had a huge effect on police overtime. |
