Totally ready to cross that border.

Yes indeed. School buses and school! Here we come.

Of course there will. There will be a stampede from upper NW. All we have to do is rent an apartment across Western Ave. Many of the large buildings in Bethesda have month-by-month leases because they cater to businesses, internationals and others who need temporary housing.

I'm betting I can get a studio for less than private school tuition.

You’re assuming that they will have space for IPL who are “new” to the district. Students who have just moved into an in bound area that did not fill out their preference for DL or IPL this past fall are waitlisted if the school cannot accommodate them due to size restraints. Maybe the process will change for the fall, but I wouldn’t make the assumption that there is a seat open just cause you have a MD address.

Our school had 73 percent request to come back and our waitlist is LONG.

You are where? MOCO?

Also, this is about the Fall, 2021, for me anyway. So it's a question of what schools announce for then, and hopefully they'd announce this summer, and I would have time to fill out preferences for IPL or not.

My colleague has a K kid in MCPS- it's not all schools bringing everyone back. Different schools are doing different things in MCPS, just like they are in DC. Her school is bringing many kids back, but her best friend's school is not because teachers have an exemption or have quit. Seems pretty similar to DC, but DC started a few months ago, thus, DC is actually ahead?

Also is your lack of coverage about staff or just the 6-foot and cohorting requirements?

Not sure I get that. DCPS is open in a hybrid model as of February. The MCPS boards are full of parents complaining that they aren't open yet, don't have IP slots for everyone, and I thought MCPS wasn't open until March.

NOT true. Thousands of kids in middle and high school are not in at all. Please don't say that crazy stuff because it just isn't true and there is no plan to get them back in school this year.

There are also many kids in elementary schools who didn’t win the lottery for in person spots and have little hope of getting in for term 4. Please be aware that claiming that DCPS is now open in a hybrid model is enabling DCPS to just pretend that those kids don’t exist and that they have done their job opening schools.

The problem is there are thousands of empty in person seats in the entire district. That’s the bigger issue. People keep claiming there are no seats but there are tons of seats. Just not at the schools you are willing to send your kids to

I know you are implying that many parents’ reluctance to send their kids all the way across town for IPL (if they were allowed to do so) is a matter of racism, but the reality is that it’s logistically impossible for anyone who is also trying to do their own full time job to shuttle their kids to a far away school every day. There is a reason most people choose to live near their kids’ school.

Then why all the fuss about sending kids to privates and charters? Privates and charters are not near homes - do people buy homes to be near a private school. I went to one for 8 years and my parents did move so they were closer to it.

People here are screaming about going private so they are willing to drive somewhere to send their kid. I know someone who doesn't want to go to her IB which is on her block and drives about 3 miles in traffic to get her kids there (35 minutes and 35 minutes away from downtown too)....... so ?

You can get to Anacostia in about 20 minutes from Ward 3.

Still can't send your kid to any school that you want in DC.

As a 10 year resident of Anacostia with a kid that went to school near Wilson, that is not true. Maybe 25-30 mins from Mass Ave if you can jump on RCP during no rush hour. But on average it’s 45+ minutes.

Yes, in MOCO, right over the border.

I’m not deterring you, I’m just stating that there is a lot of demand for IPL across the line, and it might be good to inquire what their rules are for new comers.

For those of you in DC schools, it’s not all roses and champagne this way. Im hoping they announce the plan for fall early, but I honestly don’t even think it’s on anyone radar at this point. If you can afford private, do that.

If you move to MoCo now or this summer, your kid probably won't do IPL any quicker than if you stay in DC. There's already more people on the list to join IPL than there are socially-distanced seats.

To totally divert the thread - I've been getting to my "second home" I go to work from a friend's home and it takes about 20 minutes to go from Ward 3 to just before the bridge. I can imagine going back though is totally different as I am getting RCP in the right direction for traffic. I've also only been doing this during the pandemic and traffic is super low relative to normal DC.

Your argument is stupid. You are basing this one one person you know. an individual choice is completely different than asking many people who chose a neighborhood school to drive half way across the city to send their kid to a school that is not their school with kids and teachers they don’t know.
