It's hot as hell on that lake in the summertime, this weekend the highs are going to be 105 degrees, plus you're in direct sun on the lake. It's super dry out there, too. It's not hard to get heat exhaustion, especially out on a pontoon boat, on the lake. Maybe she already had heat exhaustion/dehydration, thought she'd go for a swim to cool off, and was disoriented.

Agree with this; my sister's college friend, who was an excellent swimmer and lifeguard, came to visit us once and we went swimming at our local swimming hole - it was only about 6 or 7 feet deep, but she had a panic attack when she jumped in because she couldn't see the bottom. She'd never been swimming outside of a pool. My sister jumped in to save her and her friend pulled her under. I jumped in and my sister and I basically had to put her in a headlock to tow her to shore.

This is so very sad; feel terrible for her family and for her son.
