I can't stand cruises. But if you think your family would like one (especially a Disney cruise), then go on one. |
Yes, cruising is “tacky” but I still love it! I have lived on different continents and travelled around the world but I still appreciate a good cruise. Where else can you unpack once yet see 3, 4, or 5 countries? I love the fact that I can sit on my balcony and admire the horizon over the sea in total silence and serenity (except for the sounds of the waves of course). I also love the fact that if I want to see people, I can take the elevator to a different floor and be surrounded by music, laughter and fun. Cruises offer something for everyone whether you are seeking quiet or nonstop fun. |
Yes but there are a lot of good reasons to do one, particularly elderly family. Kids seem borderline to me but I am in favor of any kid vacation where mom doesn’t have to do dishes so cruises are fine. |
I think low end cruise lines like Carnival are tacky, but high end ones are not. |
Genuinely curious why you give a hoot what other people think about how you spend your vacation? |
This sounds like it was typed by someone with New Money. |
Or someone who is an idiot. |
+1 |
Can someone explain why it's tacky and why some people hate it? I've never been to one and have no idea what it's like. It seems like a stress free vacation. |
And by someone who cares about “looking” cultured. If you’re worried about it, you’re probably not cultured. And if you are cultured going on a cruise won’t make you less so. |
If cruising is tacky, then tacky be I. |
Same question in the LGBT forum, totally different answers. |
I’ve never been on a cruise, but after a stressful time at home, we took a trip to an all-inclusive resort. Our 12-yo called us aside midway and said something to the effect that he kept hearing at home that this kind of trip wasn’t our style, but he wanted us to know that it was very much his style and would like to go again. So, points for family happiness, but none for fanciness. ymmv. |
Honestly the people who hate on cruises the most have never been on them. Or if they have they’ve just done a shitty 3 or 5 day to the Bahamas. Cruises can be really spectacular |
Here's why I hate cruises: - They are HORRIBLE for the environment, on a level most other vacations cannot match. A cruise ship's daily emissions into the ocean are equivalent to a million cars per day. - Many times they're centered around unlimited eating, gambling ... basically crass consumption while you sit on this thing that is pumping chemicals into the ocean.' - The stops are often so short that you just get off with throngs of people, go shop at tourist traps (which are usually detrimental to the local economy) and you get back on the ship. I recognize all vacations take some toll on the environment, but the impact of cruises is way worse than most other vacation options. Not to mention you're SOL if (as has happened) the ship breaks down somehow. You're stuck on the thing. |
