Actually he threatened a female classmate after a fight over a pencil. Seriously?! In 6th grade? Over a PENCIL?!

That school needs to be shut down. It's not serving the kids with that kind of violent culture. These are the same kids that fight at NOMA all the time and stabbed a fellow student last year.

I guess all the schools in DC should be shut down then? Violent culture outside of school comes into school. Most schools are safe places but weapons have made their way in. This isn't a KIPP problem, or a charter problem, or a DCPS problem. It's a community-wide problem and needs to be addressed both outside of school and inside of school.

Gun at Wilson: https://www.washingtoncitypaper.com/news/city-desk/blog/13070196/gun-found-in-students-bookbag-at-woodrow-wilson-high-school

Spend any time searching and a bunch of articles come up. Parents and school staff need to come together and come with solutions. Schools of all types need to be safe and no school is immune to this type of nonsense.

Yes. We have a community problem. Sure. We can agree on that.

The question here is why do charter schools like KIPP expel the child from their school and leave it to a DCPS school to solve the their issue?

Your assuming everyone has some amount of shared values about non-violence and interest in the school. Sadly this is not the case or the everyone involved.

DCPS expels students for this too. And they go to one of the city’s schools for incarcerated students or if not incarcerated to a private school at public expense.

The kid is going into the criminal justice system and likely a alternative school. Unless this falls under his 504 or something he should be at a school with services that can handle this level of behavior.

He will enter the juvenile justice system. Don't be an ass.

Since when does DC discipline juveniles delinquents?

You do know that DC has a youth jail aka the juvenile detention center?

Your point? They all get a slap on the wrist and end up back on the street.

and eventually they'll end up back at DCPS at their neighborhood school, you can bet KIPP won't be taking this child as a high schooler!

I work for the city and trust me, cops don't even usually bother minors with handguns. Nothing happens, they are released within 12 hours, none go to juvenile unless I killed or critically injured someone. The average person arrested for murder in DC, already has at least 10 prior gun arrests.

If this is true it is very sad and horrible. DC needs to do a LOT more when guns are involved or any other violent crimes;

Exactly. Dcps has to clean up KIPP’s mess. Always.

KEY Academy isn't anywhere near NoMa - it's on Benning Road in SE - and this incident aside - considerably safer than nearby schools. Get a life.

Different school. KIPP College Prep is near the NOMA station and is a high school.
