Opportunity gap? Wide as ever. Overcrowding? Getting worse. Central Office? Cut some positions, but added more back in. Special Education? Cuts everywhere.

I say NAY.

He also has a huge chip on his shoulder; constantly bringing up his hard and tough middle class childhood and how he wants to level the field for the bottom.

I think this says more about you, describing this as "a huge chip on his shoulder," than it says about him.
i heard him talk at the KID museum once and that was his preamble as well. His poor upbringing and how he wants to focus on the poor uneducated parent families mainly. He was clear to tie it together as a personal and professional goal of his. Panders well too.
Meanwhile- rounded grades, no final exams, terrible k-8 curriculum 2.0, disgruntled teachers, stagnant test scores, vastly overcrowded huge schools, lack of gym/science/for language/soc studies in k-5, magnet programs requiring 60-90 minute one way bus rides, etc.

I think Smith is ok. I have a problem with people like Docca and Pat O'Neal in the BOE

I have no idea why this woman is hanging on to the BOE because she has been the architect of the downfall of MCPS.

Shame!!

Wait, what?

Right?! And the nerve of him to want to bring some focus onto a marginalized subgroup of students in his public school district!

The teachers at my Elementary School can't stand him. I'm in Special Ed, and the cuts have been devastating. Add to that the crap coming out of central office, and I would get rid of him in a heartbeat, as I bet would 99% of those at our school.

A few key central office admin have left with Dr. Darryl Williams to go to BCPS, including two directors and the head of family and community engagement. I’m sure it’s a promotion, but still, I think it’s telling.

x100 - and the # of higher ups in central that are fleeing to other jurisdictions is comical.

Special ed had their day during no child left behind. The pendulum has swung. It will come back.

Most parents could care less if central office people are leaving. I'd happily not replace them.

What some parents don't seem to understand is that while there was certainly fluff at the central office level, it has been completely reorganized with individuals now in roles that they are not qualified to hold. I'm an administrator who went to a meeting recently where all the "experts" should have been available to help. Not one of them could answer a question. Please bring back competence.

+100!

The crap Central Office pushes out has no basis in reality. And there is no support for teachers or parents. Agree we need to bring back competance!

The enrollment has skyrocketed and the $ per pupil has not been maintained (remember when the governor held the school money for random?). There have been cuts everywhere, including my department. ESOL has been slashed (there is no more ESOL department), Focus funds are slimmer, etc. It’s not unique to special ed. If it were, you’d have a point, but everyone is feeling the pinch. You have to share the pot.

Yes. I know my friends who teach music are feeling it too.

I was always hoping that Christopher Garran, the former principal at Walter Johnson would rise through the ranks and be Superintendent. Smart guy. He was a community superintendent, I think, but when Starr left instead of making him Acting Supt they chose Larry Bowers. Ugh. Garran was young and energetic and I think would have been here for the long haul.
But when they picked Larry to be acting, Garran took a job as headmaster of a private school. Oh well.

This.

There has been a HUGE influx of students enrolled in MCPS. There is only so much money to go around.
