They were from a number of different schools |
Yes +1000. Didn’t Tulane under go a major overhaul after Katrina- new missions statement, dropping some programs and really focusing on community service? Tulane will always have a party vibe because it’s in New Orleans-Laissez les bon temps rouler. I am older and remember Duke before coach K. |
Tulane cut most of its engineering program which was a big shocker. Katrina cost Tulane hundreds of millions of dollars in damages. It’s concerning for future classes, I mean, it’s New Orleans. They’re going to flood and have hurricanes again. |
My DD goes to Tulane. No idea where the "shithole" exists. Yes, there are older buildings and dorms (like every other school that's been in existence for over 100 years), however, they are doing lots of renovations and building a new dorm and dining hall. 2 years ago when DD started they had just completed a total renovation of the food court in the very modern student center. Before that, they built a gorgeous new stadium. In addition, my DD who was an A-/B student throughout high school with a rigorous course load and high ACT scores has not found this school to be a cake-walk at all. Of course, there are students who party hard, but she has met some really nice people who do not come from wealthy families and are super well grounded. As she likes to say, kids who want to party will do it no matter what school they go to. One more thing about Tulane. Clearly, they are trying to up their game. I get that. However, they are selective with who they give merit scholarships to. If you get one, they give a good chunk of money that is clearly to entice kids on the upper end of the academic spectrum who may have passed them over for other schools. So yes, they do recruit widely, but we know from experience who they REALLY want by wooing them with large amounts of merit and who they will accept if they are willing to pay full freight. Ten years from now, the stats of students from Tulane will be even higher and that's their goal. The new guy who came in to be president from Penn (Dean of the law school) a few years ago is very ambitious and honestly, very impressive. |
Tulane is on some of the highest ground in the city and did not flood. |
Huh? “The School of Engineering is not the only part of the university to undergo changes in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, which left floodwater over two-thirds of the campus and caused up to $250 million in property damage and more than $90 million in operational losses.” Tulane's Engineering Students Strive to Save Their School https://www.nytimes.com/2006/01/14/us/nationalspecial/tulanes-engineering-students-strive-to-save-their-school.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share |
| ^^Tulane cut its engineering school, canceled classes for the Fall semester and relocated its medical school and operations to Texas for many months. Yeah, Katrina had a negative effect on Tulane. |
Katrina was 13 years ago. |
Strange for a large university to not have a proper engineering department. |
| My DD is a relatively high stats student who was deferred EA. She definitely did not show sufficient interest directly to Tulane but is somewhat obsessed by their incredible service culture. Since she has been accepted to JMU Honors and UVA, she would need a very compelling offer to convince us to pay for Tulane if she was even to be accepted, which appears unlikely given the admission stats. Congrats to those accepted! |
If you are for real, then choosing JMU over Tulane would be tantamount to child abuse. |
| JMU Honors with UVA Law is a cost-effective plan and would allow me to support her in many other ways. |
| Wow I remember when Tulane was where the slackers/partiers my prep school went, but I don't think I get in today. And I graduated in '07, crazy. |
Why not UVA and then UVA Law? |
You are an sanctimonious a$$hole. |
