VA Zip Codes for Good Schools?

Anonymous
My kids went to Falls Church high school (Fairfax County school).

We are also slated for FCHS. A lot of people talk badly about it and are afraid of it. But the people we know in our neighborhood ($600K+ homes) whose kids actually go there love it, for all the reasons the PP mentioned: smaller, more personal, less competition for teams and clubs, etc.

Not trying to upsell FCHS LOL, but I think that all things are relatively. I find it amusing when people try to narrow in on which incredibly high priced zip code feeds into the "best" high school, when all FCPS high schools, even the "bad" ones are amazing schools compared to the vast majority of the country. We are so privileged here it's astounding.

The simple reality is that a lot of people recoil at the thought of paying big bucks for DC area real estate and then sending their kids to a local school (and FCHS falls in this category) where the test scores are below county, state and federal averages. It's unfortunate, because there probably are advantages to being at a smaller school and the motivated students will do well at any FCPS school, but it does put the parents and students at these schools who are having a positive experience in a defensive, selling mode a lof of the time.

Well sure. Any time your kid goes to a non name brand school, some parents will be defensive. And some people will be snotty to you. You can't live your life making choices based on what other people might think. And for those of us who can't even afford a shack in the "good" zip codes, we deal with it every day.

It's funny when you mention a "non name brand school," because we're mostly talking about public schools in a county system here - yet, it's definitely the case that your going to see more cars with "Langley Saxon Lacrosse" or "McLean Highlander Soccer" decals than "Falls Church Jaguar Field Hockey." Maybe the colors just go better with that OBX sticker!

This is a great neighborhood. 22031

Uh, nope. Not many OBX stickers in McLean.
