I think you should send your kids to Wichita State. I mean they'll do just as well.
Us, we're aiming for one of the Ivies or top 10 SLACs though.

does this make anyone else cringe?

This is 13:01. Meant to say race is a huge factor in this discussion.

Sitting next to two people from Big 4 consulting firm upper level management the other day. One went to Georgetown for both undergrad and grad school. The other went to Maryland has an MBA from University of Phoenix. They're about the same age and have been with the firm for the same amount of time. Guess which one is up for partner this year and which one won't be up for a while.

No. DC will make the final decision but the parents can explain the pros and cons of the various options.
I think a student should aim for the best school they can get in to that the family can afford.

If you want to write a popular article, write something that says "You Don't Need a College Degree" or "It Really Doesn't Matter Where You Go To College." This same basic concept gets published over and over again by various sites and never fails to get clicks.

well that's a gross exaggeration ... but the kid was out ahead of the parents even on most of the choices, probably because of the peer group at DC's school.
Oh, and denials haven't been a problem

I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in this topic:

Yeah

UVA likes to say it's higher ranked in US news than U.MD

U.MD likes to say it's higher ranked in all world rankings , has more Nobel , Emmy, academy award, Pulitzer, World impact alum and more national championships than UVA .

But they are both just colleges like any other.

Of course it matters where you go to college, that is so hard-wired into this society its not remotely funny.

It takes longer for someone who didn't go to a great university to get to that place.

I went to a no name university. I don't necessarily think that top university students make for better workers (I've experienced this in the workplace), but it does make it easier to get your foot in the door, and if you are a good worker, to go up faster than if you went to a no name school.

But I do agree that it doesn't make you any happier. That comes from other things for most people.

That is your story, but there are plenty of anecdotes to counter yours.

I disagree. College choice matters a lot, principally to avoid debt and get into a suitable program that's the right fit.
There are a lot more considerations than just branding, but brands matter too.

From what you wrote, I can't tell. If it is the GU person who is up for partner, the problem in the other resume is Pheonix. Terminal degree is the most relevant and important, and for profit really can't be compared to not for profit. Replace that MBA with one from a top 20 MBA program and there would be no difference. And yes, plenty of top 20 MBA students went to UMD.

College is a halfway house for snowflake helicoptered kids to learn how to live without mom for a bit before they move back into moms basement.
