Would you wear a cross necklace to work?

Yes, and I do frequently.

As a non Christian, it doesn't bother me at all when people wear cross jewelry.

I was a bit turned off when I found a new ob/gyn wearing a large cross. Then she started talking about how her Christian faith guides her practice as a doctor ... I decided I didn't want her faith determining my medical care, so I found a different doc. But unless you are in an industry where Christian doctrine might influence your work (or even give others an impression that it could), I wouldn't worry about it.

I don't think it matters what religion is represented by something someone is wearing. People are free to express their religious faith by wearing symbols unless they are in a workplace that expressly forbids it for all.

So, it doesn't matter that this particular question involves a cross necklace. Any religious item is fine.

If you have any special considerations, such as working with religiously diverse clients who might be put off by it, that could be a reason not to wear it at work. But generally that should fall into personal expression and be OK.

Would you say the same thing to a Muslim woman, asking if it would be OK to wear a hijab to work?

Not PP, but I think a hijab is different because women who wear it usually feel it's a requirement of their faith, like Jewish men who wear a kippah or religious women of various faiths who dress modestly (long sleeves/pants/skirts). I've never heard that wearing a cross is a religious requirement of any faith, as opposed to a personal expression of faith.

I wear a Star of David myself, around the office, but not to court arguments or interviews. And if I were in private practice and had religious clients of another religion, I might not wear it so as to not make them uncomfortable. For me it is optional. However, if I were Orthodox, I would not alter my expression of faith for any of these scenarios.

So, this person's feelings as to what is a requirement in her faith is more important than my or someone else's desire to wear a Christian cross necklace? Just making sure I'm clear on your point.

All religious displays in the workplace bug me - I don't care if it's a hijab, a yarmulke, a cross, or a pentagram. But I recognize it's your right to wear symbols of your private beliefs openly, even if I disagree.

I wouldn't, becasue of posters like this. I hide my faith - people dislike me enough as it is.

Oh, cry me a river. We all hide things at work in order to maintain professional and cordial relationships. I bite my tongue about divisive issues all the time. But religion is different and special, right?

Actually, yes.

Although I highly doubt you bite your tongue.

You need to ask yourself why you take other peoples’ beliefs so personally. If you can’t ignore somebody else’s jewelry or clothing when it has no impact on you personally, then maybe you should talk to a professional.

Not a cross because I'm not Christian, but I have worn religious jewelry in my government office. Others do too. No one wears a loud anything in our office. A small cross, Buddha or star isn't unusual at all. The

What do you disagree with exactly? My private beliefs? Why does this bug you?

Cross earrings, cross necklace, cross ring, HUGE cross above my front door to keep liberals away.

I am agnostic. I can't imagine "not" wearing a cross if you want to. Please do.

Look around -- do you see others wearing religious jewelry? Ask your boss. Read the regulations.

Uuh, where does one work where the wearing of religious jewelry is prohibited (re: the reference to regulations)? Yikes!

I would say, yes, a cross is fine at a federal agency. And if it isn't, you should get HR involved!
