Why is VA such a hotbed for alt-right thinking?

It's probably a combination of Virginia having a southern culture while also being relatively well-educated. Most intellectuals veer to the Left, but in Virginia they veer to the Right.

yet Charlottesville, the seat of UVA, typically votes Dem, and I think Blacksburg (seat of VTech) usually does as well. And highly educated Arlington votes heavily D.

Do y'all actually spend any time in Va?

Apparently having a good mix of both Democrats and Republicans in a state make it a "hotbed for alt-right thinking".

Virginia is a purple state where our votes actually matter. It's diverse in it's population and gets on quite well while having a large mix of both left and right voters. Many counties/cities that go blue, many that go red and a few that change with each election.

I have neighbors that voted both ways. Yes, I'm a person that can actually say that I know people that voted for Hillary AND people that voted for Trump AND people that voted 3rd party.

Imagine that! Diversity!

So glad I don't live in a bubble.

I don't think most of "intellectuals" in VA are voting right. There are tons of lesser-educated people in VA too. In all states. Look at the election.

Virginia has a long history of smart, "genteel" folks intellectualizing abhorrent ideas such as slavery, Jim Crow, miscengation laws, racism, and the Confederacy.

If anything, I find those same people willing to do just about anything to ensure their hereditary wealth and power continues to pass along the generations.

It goes back to its founding. A colony for second sons of the English rich to come and make their fortune. Individual rights are numero uno. Compare it to Massachusetts that was founded a community and where the good of the entire community is weighed against the individual.

Virginia is two states (or Commonwealths). One is blue (northern) and one is red/gray (southern). There really is not a mixing. Take away, Alexandria, Arlington and Fairfax and Virginia is just like one of the gulf southern states.

Please don't speak of that which you don't know.

Counties/Cities outside of Alexandria, Arlington and Fairfax (and Fall Church) that went blue for Obama in 2012:

Albemarle
Brunswick
Caroline
Charles City
Charlottesville
Chesapeake
Covington
Danville
Emporia
Essex
Franklin City
Fredericksburg
Greenville
Hampton
Harrisonburg
Henrico
Hopewell
Lexington
Loudoun
Manassas
Manassas Park
Martinsville
Nelson
Newport News
Northampton
Petersburg
Portsmouth
Prince Edward
Prince William
Radford
Richmond City
Roanoke City
Staunton
Suffolk
Surry
Sussex
Westmoreland
Williamsburg
Winchester

We are a solidly mixed state. NoVa runs more blue for sure, but it's not the only area of Va.

How about Clinton? How about Obama in 2008? John Kerry? Al Gore? Clinton? There was maybe a glimmer of hope 4 years ago but VA is still solidly backwater.

You can look those stats up yourself! I've given you an example. And like I said, there are many counties that will shift with each election. That's why the votes here actually matter.

Most people are pretty centrist. I know many that may vote for a republican president and a democrat at the state or local level and vice versa.

I don't need to - I lived through those disappointing elections. Richmond is even more backwater than presidential elections. The propositions passed are revolting. I think when the current batch of Old Boy white dudes dies off we might see more significant change.

Then why ask?

Anyway, the point of my post is that there is of a variety of voters in Va contradicting the OP's post that the state is a "hotbed for alt-right thinking".

Yes, there are some staunch Republicans and I abhor some of the crap Richmond pulls, but never the less this is a purple state. Plenty of voters on both sides of the aisle. Not an alt-right hotbed.

Is it vestiges of the civil war still in the soil?

Not really, OP. You are biased and only pulling out examples that you need to make your argument. There's some fault in your thinking is all.

I wouldn't call the alt right intellectual or well-educated. Most of them that I have met are technically trained and pretty smart, but don't have a strong background in the history or economics or sociology or psychology or any of the humanities. Engineering types.

In California and Seattle, the same guys veer libertarian.

Despite being smart, they are kind of idiots. They are vastly ignorant on a whole range of topics, but they unaware of their own ignorance. The don't know what they don't know, to paraphrase Donald Rumsfield.
