Am I off base regarding reasonable ages for independent travel on metro/in D.C.?

My DS has been riding Metro daily to and from school since he was 14. At first I was nervous about it, but it is a great learning experience for them. He often goes with other classmates, but occasionally travels alone. Sometimes he will hang out in Union Station and have dinner before coming home. I track him using the find friends app.
