My standard of living has not decreased one bit. My family and my kids are flourishing. Think about it....you said it yourself. My property values are increasing. But I understand your point - I just think it is too early to get riled up about it. And bringing in the subject of children of illegals (most of these children being citizens themselves) is a red herring IMO. We have plenty of financial follies hitting the budget - pet projects for Council Members, etc. but blaming the County's budget problems on ESOL students just is not accurate. |

This is a serious hike that will adversely impact people on fixed incomes (seniors, disabled) and those who live paycheck to paycheck.
Landlords will pass these costs onto their renters. So, while a $400 increase (modest estimate for a $450k house) doesn't seem like a lot to some people, it most certainly will be a burden to renters to have their rent increase by that much (or more). And BTW, the money won't go towards the schools. The county is scrambling for new revenue to pay for the recent lawsuit/Supreme Court ruling. |
Check the MoCo school budget to see how much is really spent for ESOL services. I think you will find it is a substantial part of the budget. And, it isn’t decreasing. |

This prompted the tax hike. They've been planning for this for years as the lawsuit made it's way up. This is the only way to generate enough revenue. It's not going to schools. |
That is a rate increase applied to what assessment? http://www.montgomerycountymd.gov/OMB/Resources/Files/omb/pdfs/fy17/psprec/MCG_FY17_REC_BUDGET.pdf p 18-47m more for affordable housing. Seniors or others? p 20-"Funds to support a new Citizenship and Immigrant Integration Services Program" p 21-"County grows larger and more diverse, it becomes more challenging to meet the needs of that growing population...." p 22-"property tax for each owner-occupied residence will include a credit of $692 to limit the burden on homeowners and maintain a progressive property tax structure in the County" AND the ridulous Maryland renters tax credit made it's way to MOCO https://www.montgomerycountymd.gov/COUNCIL/Resources/Files/bill/2015/Packets/20150609_10.pdf |
You responded to me as well as to some other posters with this. I am not blaming ESOL for this. I am simply saying that $350 may not seem like a big deal, but it's more than $350 since property values are also rising. This rise has little to do with the MOCO govt and more to do with the local economy. This affects renters and those on a fixed income a lot more than it affects you. I am glad you are doing well and see this rise property taxes as no big deal, but many who don't benefit so much from the services (and even those that receive services) are struggling and it's somewhat of a big deal to them.. |
No need to worry about a free ride here. If you truly believe the tax hike is going to ESOL (even though it isn't), you can relax because all the immigrants who rent houses, THs and condos will pay increased rents to cover the tax hike on landlords. |

Montgomery County is clearly in trouble. But hell, they sure do have endless cheap illegal labor. Hey, need a sitter, housekeeper, or gardener? Heck, you can even get one person to do it all, plus cook and clean your dirty laundry, for pennies on the dollar.
Is there even anyplace in Montgomery County for me to report these abusive property owner employers? Obviously these workers are afraid of getting deported if their employers are reported for fraud. Are their fears valid? |
Not to get too political here, but there most certainly is a free ride or near free ride for those at the lower-income level. whether it be Section 8, subsidized housing or 6 kids living in a 3BR townhouse, the people in 800K houses are paying the bulk of the freight. Let's be real. |
Dear Clueless: Only citizens are eligible for Section 8/subsidized housing. So you can relax: illegals aren't getting a free ride. And like I said before, they will bear the brunt of these property taxes by paying increased rents for SFHs, THs and condos. |
| And to go a step further: citizens with section 8 or VASH vouchers (for veterans) will now struggle even more to find a landlord willing to rent to them at the rate deemed FMV. So, they're screwed, too. Feel better? |
Dear Genius: I never addressed "illegals". Try again. |
Nice try, but read the thread you quoted. Either way you are wrong. Now I'm going to do the Church Lady's superiority dance. |
| You liberals keep voting for this, so why is anybody surprised? |
OMG, you quoted my post, you must agree with everything I said. OMG you are stupid. |
