A high church is one that has a lot of formality and ritual in the service. Incense, parts of the service that are sung or chanted rather than spoken, traditional music and instrumentation, and genuflecting to the altar, are all examples of things that signal "high church". In addition, the high church sections of the Anglican communion often have some theological similarities with Catholicism, leaning more towards doctrines like transubstantiation, recognizing sacraments beyond Eucharist and Baptism, and showing reverence for saints.

A lot of people think that because the high church practices are very old, and very traditional, that the people who follow them must be old fashioned or traditional in political or social ways. They are often surprised to find that many people who choose high church parishes are very socially liberal on issues such as gay marriage.

Wrong. Rev. Kathleen Christopher. Google it. Hugely popular. enormous congregation. 8:00 a.m. is as close as you will get to high-church. No smells and bells. No incense. No Saints. No transsubstantiation. Kathleen usually conducts the 8:00 a.m. service. The 9:00 service is still formal but is not rigid in following Rite I or Rite II. The 11:00 service is very song and praise band oriented (can be very loud). Youth groups meet in the evening. www.tfcanglican.com.

My apologies. Normally people come on here to attack The Falls Church Anglican and go right for the "no women priests" which is just dead wrong. I jumped the gun above. Great church. There is something for everyone. New sanctuary being built. But most services are not what you would call "high church" episcopalian. There is a strong evangelic streak. It's called "orthodox evangelical Anglican". Many of the other Anglican churches mentioned above with the exception of Truro are daughter churches planted by The Falls Church Anglican. Try the 8:00 for the most orthodox.

Two women priests now at The Falls Church Anglican. Here's the service times. Most orthodox is the earliest at 8 a.m. http://tfcanglican.org/services

OP - if you truly want a high-church experience, try St. Paul's Anglo-Catholic in Georgetown. http://www.stpauls-kst.com/about-us/anglo-catholic-tradition

We remain committed to being together, albeit we asked that TEC, while attending and playing a full part in our meetings and all discussions, will not represent the Anglican Communion to other churches and should not be involved in standing committees for a period of three years. During this time we also asked that they not vote on matters of doctrine or how we organise ourselves.

That sure sounds like a suspension to me.

Organizations that are suspended are not allowed to do the bolded.

Will you take the work of the Washington Post? Episcopalians SUSPENDED from world-wide Anglican Communion

You're going to take a WaPo headline over a communication from a senior church official? Some realities,,what it means is that they can't vote at meetings. The Anglican Communion will still continue to gladly take US funding from the Episcopal church.

Perhaps once upon a time. Today there are 85 million Anglicans wordwide, while the no. of U.S. Episcopalians has dropped by half toonly 1.5M. Only 700,000 actually attend Episc. services in the U.S. Bishop Schori bankrupted the ECUSA to the point where even its NYC headquarters had to be sold in order to pay for litigation against the departing parishes.
