Both Big Ten Midwestern schools. Chicago is more purely intellectual.

Chicago is not a Big Ten school.

NU (not NW, any poster using that has likely not set foot on campus) has both strong preprofessional programs and strong liberal arts and sciences. It is a complete university, like a state flagship but smaller. u of C does what it does (liberal arts and Sciences) incredibly well, but NU is no slackerbib that area.

UChicago left the Big 10 in 1946. It has < 6k undergrads and a 5:1 student:faculty ratio. It's more like a top Ivy than a Big Ten school in terms of demographics and reputation.

That said, Northwestern isn't a typical Big Ten either (smaller, private). More like UPenn than Penn State.

At least for undergraduates, UChicago is definitely not like a top Ivy in terms of demographics or reputation. It's more like a cross between Oberlin and Brown (lesser Ivy).

Very different schools. Bright kids at both. More intellectually driven at UC.

If your kid likes football and frats, don't waste time with UC. That is not who goes there.

Back in the day, UC was fairly self-selecting. Maybe all I offer is dated.

Your kid is not a shoe-in at either.

Oveberlin and Brown? Clearly all you looked at was stats. Brown and UC are pretty much ch opposites in terms of education philosophy.

Median scores are slightly higher at U of C than HYP. Single digit admissions. Meets full need, so skews to the economic extremes. International rep attracts highly-qualified foreign students. Grad students outnumber undergrads. Major research university. Ranked third by USNWR. That's why I said similar to top Ivies.

Not similar at all to Oberlin. And different in significant ways from Brown, both in terms of undergrad program and where the college fits within the university as a whole.

The big ten is an academic consortium an Chicago is still in it. It only withdrew for sports. Hopkins is also an affiliate member and may join like Chicago for the synergy but Hopkins being the nations largest research budget can stand alone.

Ideal would be to have UChicago on the resume but to actually spend the four years in Evanston.

NU - great school, great environment
UofC - wow academics for serious students, many of whom wouldn't want to attend a Big 10 football game anyway.

If I was hiring for marketing, I'd hire from NU. If I was hiring for a quant position, I'd hire from UofC

It's 2017, swots apply to both and the rest of the usual suspects and attend the highest ranked one they get into. UChicago is now #2 US News -- plus Obama and Axelrod, new high rise dorms & vulgar endowment make it the hottest college in the nation.

Chicago is not in the Big 10 currently but it was one of its founding members. It left in the 1940's.
