What I found interesting about Kenyon is that the college basically surrounds the center of the town, Gambier. So while Gambier is small, students are crossing through the center several times per day, which makes the college feel very much part of the town and vice versa.

Gambier is a town like my local strip mall is a town. Kenyon is bigger than Gambier. We were impressed with Kenyon, but my DD just couldn't do it when she heard the most popular thing to do on weekends (besides drinking) was to take a bus to the Mt. Vernon Ohio Walmart.

Kenyon is terrific. Not for everyone, but a terrific school. And while kids occasionally go to Walmart to get stuff, they do not hang out at Walmart. There's lots to do on campus.

Neither have Nobel laureates.

Nobel prize winners tend to work at leading research universities, not so much at SLACs.

+1

We've toured both colleges, which have beautiful campuses. Kenyon's is particularly special.

I'm from here. I was interested in Hamilton and got a full ride. Went elsewhere. Anyway, in MD, I seriously had not heard of Kenyon. No one talked about it.

America is pretty territorial. In the Midwest, no one talks about the University of Maryland or even Johns Hopkins.

When people in the Heartland hear "Hopkins" they think of Cleveland.

I know. My husband is from Chicago so these schools are very familiar to him. I never realized how regional schools are until marrying him. He went to Iowa State. I was like WTH?

No kidding, I was in the Modwest and mentioned my DH went to Johns Hopkins and my colleague said "oh, is that in North Carolina?" However, he was very familiar with Grinnell so go figure.

My DD went to Hamilton and love it... but it is a school full of kids of upper-upper middle class to wealthy family and is not diverse. She is white and we are rich so it was a school full of people like herself.

Do either schools consider VA applicants to be "diverse"?
