NP here - I have a rising sophomore and one in college and just thought I'd mention this. Many places *require* that volunteers younger than a certain age (often that age is 14) be accompanied by a parent. No flaming please - it's not my idea - but this is what we found in place after place when my eldest was this age and trying to find a volunteer gig. You had to be 16 or older to volunteer w/o a parent present. This really limited the places he was able to volunteer. Some places will take the younger kids, but not many. I guess because they don't want to be seen as free child care for kids who may or may not be actually helping/working. The exceptions were CITs.
