Dr. Starr emphasized that the county cannot change magnet program structure. “I will not and cannot be changing the Magnet structure. I have not diminished [nor] increased magnet programs.”

it will face slow death.

I fail to see how you can conclude this. As someone who attended the info meeting reported, 100% of the students in magnet core/required classes are magnet students and 90% of the students in magnet elective classes are magnet students.

I think this settles the debate about the program being "dumbed down"

As someone who went thru the magnet let me tell you that you are wrong.

Junior Marie-Therese Burton (“It seems that the Magnet is becoming assimilated with the rest of the school.") was and is right.
The magnet is being slowly dismantled.

No, you just keep repeating the same thing. How do we know that the program is being dumbed down? Because it is. How do we know that the magnet is being dismantled? Because it is. If this is the kind of logic that got you through the magnet, then I don't think it would be possible for the program to be dumbed down now, compared to when you went there.

Sistah, a magnet student is saying the magnet is being assimilated with the rest of the school. Starr didn't deny it. He didn't say it couldn't be done. He just said he wasn't doing.

Can the principal do it? Look at what she did to the magnet program at her last school.

Watch how MCPS will slowly assimilate the magnet into the regular school

1. Counselors assigned only to magnet students were removed.
2. Classes were shortened to the point they mean less than an AP course.
3. The dumbed down classes were opened to everyone who wanted it.

Blair defenders keep pulling in students to the magnet to show that even with a fully assimilated magnet they will come. Then, they will argue that you don't need the magnet.

5-6 years. 10 at most. RIP magnet.

It is already on its last legs with veteran teachers "retiring" and magnet students being recruited by other programs. The principal's history of dismantling magnets and students realizing that the magnet is being dismantled is causing a bad atmosphere for learning.

The principal's known antogonism towards the magnet and her being viewed as a relentless self promoter----kids point to her twitter feed which usually fatures a selfie----has made the school a bad place to be.

Was at the presentation and realized that all the accomplishments were pre Rene Johnson.

This is a useful post for any psychology student wishing to study this particular poster because it contains all her standard wishful delusions in one place. There's not one shred of truth in any of it, as anyone associated with the magnet, the school, the greater DCC community, or reality knows. But she'll continue to come here regularly and write about how the principal's tweeting is destroying the school, and then respond to herself.

The one part I wish was true is the part about "other programs." Sure would be nice if there were more spots and opportunities for advanced students, particularly the hundreds of kids each year who don't get into the Blair magnet.

What is special about the Blair magnet?

Oops!! Meant to ask what was so special about the Blair magnet? Wasn't that impressed by their presentation or the size of the school and the type of students it seems to be attracting.

Sweetums, my kid attended the Takoma magnet while Principal Johnson was there and moved to Blair the same year Johnson did.

Johnson did not dumb down the middle school magnet. You say things like "look what she did to the magnet program at her last school" and then you provide no content about it. That's because you have no content to provide.

1. Why do you think the magnet students need their own counselors? It's true that now counselors at Blair are assigned alphabetically. But who the heck cares?
2. What do you mean by "classes were shortened"? Lots of magnet classes have always been one semester. But that's because the magnet squishes a whole year into one semester. Then the kids often take the AP tests in the spring anyway. Nothing has changed. What are you talking about?
3. You haven't proven your assertion that classes were "dumbed down," probably because you can't prove it. Also, many magnet classes are closed to non-magnet kids. In the open classes, about 10% of the kids are non-magnet. That's because the magnet classes are HARD. Contrary to what you keep claiming.

You are nuts! And you don't know very much about the magnet.

I Googled "Blair magnet enrollment" and didn't find any data on enrollment numbers. Could you point me to the data, please? Or at least tell me what to Google?

The magnet is not being dismantled or assimilated. Bold font doesn't make you right non magnet kids have always been allowed to take magnet classes in both cap and stem provided there is space and you test in. That isn't changing.
