This suggests to me that "nick" means "fake". It doesn't, though.

You are ridiculous, PP. I've met a few Mary Kates that are just Kate. And I've met a Tess or too that are just Tess. OP, can do what she wants and it doesn't reflect poorly on anyone as these are actual names. Get the stick out of your butt.

It does reflect poorly on a child if they are tagged with nicknames. They will have to explain it constantly. But then, how can I expect you to understand? You can't even spell, much less use commas correctly.

New poster. Of all the things that read poorly about a name, a nick name for a middle name would not even show up on my radar. Who would she even have to explain to? No one uses a nickname for their middle name. For instance my middle name is Elizabeth, and I would never refer to myself as Larla Liz. Likewise I would never assume that someone telling me their middle name was telling me anything other than their legal given name. Yes there might be a risk if you name a child "Kate" that she will have to explain that she is "just Kate" (though that's a pretty small inconvenience in the world of naming). But that risk just isn't there with a middle name.

My point exactly. You don't do it, and people will say things like, "isn't your middle name actually ________?" And then, the poor kid will not even understand the question. Meanwhile, they sound like a country bumpkin (aka "Larla Liz.") Why do this to your kid?

I figure anyone who picks a classic name like Natalie for a first name is looking for a classic middle name.

Exactly NOT your point. The PP is saying that nobody named Larla Elizabeth will introduce themselves as Larla Liz. Therefore, if Larla Liz's name is Larla Liz, people will assume that Larla's middle name is Liz.

Real life example: I know somebody who goes by Mary Beth Lastname. And her name, in fact, is Mary Beth Lastname. Her name is not Mary Elizabeth Lastname, and I can't imagine that anybody thinks her name is Mary Elizabeth Lastname, even though yes, everybody knows that Beth is a nickname for Elizabeth.

You are so wrong about this. Mary Beth is a very Midwestern nickname for Mary Elizabeth. Anyone from the Midwest would recognize this one. And don't presume to tell me what my own point is...you don't even know me.

That's interesting. I'm from Iowa, and I have never met a Mary Elizabeth who went by Mary Beth.

Ann was my first thought, too, but it is a tad boring.

What about Cate or Elena? Or grace?

This is pp again - I said grace before seeing that a bunch of others suggested it too. I think you have consensus on that one
