Anyone forbidding Minecraft for their 9 year old?

Minecraft is disgusting. I wish I had never let my 10 year old play it. It is not the creative, intellectual game it's made out to be. It seems to be about killing -- killing animals, creepers, etc. Yuck.

If someone came up with a game that was ACTUALLY as Minecraft is described, they could make a fortune. Anyone?

I think your problem with minecraft might be kid specific.

Anyone can take something innocent and make it evil. It is all in the approach. Too bad that is how your kid plays.

My kids, their cousins and friends all play together on a server.

They built a town, complete with a museum and childrens hospital. They assigned each other jobs like museum curator, city planner, chief of police, architects, interior designers, town geologist, farmer, etc.

It was quite elaborate really and kept them busy for weeks.

Yes, they killed some zombies but it was not any more gruesome or violent than Pacman or Asteroids was back in the day.

Maybe work with your kid if all he wanted to do in Minecarft was the violent stuff. You will have this issue with all video games if you have that kind of kid.

Pacman and Asteroids did not involve killing or blood. Eating animals is part of life -- but it doesn't have to be part of video games for children. My son doesn't have an obsession with violence. I don't care for the sound of pigs squealing when they're being killed in the background, even if it's only occasional. I think it's sick, even once. That you find it a normal part of life for kids playing computer games is troubling.

Are you vegetarian? If not, you really ought to get over that.

My 8 yr old boy does not play and hasn't asked. He's more of a sports obsessed kind of kid than a builder. . . so he prefers his screen time to be spent watching ESPN. Fine by me. I certainly am not going to encourage Minecraft becasue he doesn't need more electronic lures in his life.

My 7 y/o DD has been playing Minecraft for two years and loves it. She only plays in creative mode (tried survival a couple of times and didn't like it) and only on servers where all participants are known.

She LOVES to build things and this lets her get very creative. She also has an app for Minecraft tips and codes and a few books.

She loves it. I set a time limit and let her have fun with it. NBD

May I say Minecraft is infinitely preferable to some of the crap they could be playing. My DC plays League of Legends and it is about impossible to get him off.
Basically, these things are an addiction.

^ should add - maybe Minecraft is a 'gateway drug" so to speak -- DC started on Minecraft then moved to some of the harder stuff out there.

In Minecraft you kill Chickens to get feathers and chicken to eat... if you don't cook the chicken first you get sick. Important life lesson there. You kill pigs for meat. You can use cows for milk or kill them for meat and leather.

So tell me genius... where would we get beef, pork, of poultry if we didn't kill animals?

My 9 year old loves the game but mostly for the Creative game style. I recently bought him a book about Redstone circuitry and he has learned a basic understanding of computing logic from it.

If your 10 year old dwells on the violent aspects of the game maybe you need to be involved with your child's gameplay. I built a server for my son and I to play together so I could encourage the creative style of gameplay instead of making it purely about killing. For us the game became more about creating a virtual "Clubhouse" where the two of us and his friends could play and gather even when we couldn't get together in person.

Yes, we kill animals to eat them but most of us don't do it for fun. Nice that you had to be insulting too.....

What is this animal killing? I know my son has let them fall of the cliff sometimes. Mostly he makes them little pens and grows grass.

You killed at ate ghosts in Pacman. Far more violent than killing zombies. At least you don't eat the zombies in Minecraft.

They are not killing pigs for pleasure. They are killing for food. They raise them, nurture them and butcher them at the end. A good lesson for kids that food does not just magically appear on a grocery store shelf or restaurant table.

Yes, because I don't want to teach my kids to enjoy killing. I don't want them to grow up to work for a slaughter house either, although i know someone has to do it.
