Turned down from a retail job

I've been there, OP! There are a lot of folks looking for work, and retail/customer service industry is not immune to the recession. They definitely have lots of applications for each position if the work/wages are humane.

I suspect you are already communicating that you will bring value to the company. The manager at Penny's didn't doubt that you'd be an asset. She doubted you'd stick around. So that's the concern you need to be able to put to rest.

I'd try to come up with a narrative about why you want the jobs you apply for. Something along the lines of changing careers/getting out of former profession/seeking more flexibility/whatever reason makes sense for why you want this job and aren't just looking for a quick paycheck until you find something better.

Also, has others have suggested, look for temporary work -- contract work, temp work, call center work, etc. where everyone is a short time employee and that won't hold you back. GL!

A lot of retails jobs do background checks...it wouldn't be wise to leave off other job even if they aren't relavent to retail.
