"That One"

Quick note: there is an elaborate protocol in the Senate of collegiality. Even if you are skewering someone, (s)he is your "esteemed colleague" or "the distinguished Senator" or some similar euphemism. If the name escaped McCain, one of these terms, or even a simple "he" would have served.

I go with disdain.

(I would ask you Obama supporters to name one actual accomplishment he can claim other than writing memoirs about all he has accomplished, but I kind of give up....)

An actual accomplishment, like being kept in the military despite crashing a plane five times thanks to your high-ranking father, or abandoning your wife suffering from terrible injuries in a car accident and following your multiple infidelities to marry a beer heiress whose money buys your way into politics, or trying to make more money through the S&L scandal at the taxpayers' expense, or supporting an unnecessary and disastrous war? Is this what you have in mind?

Weighed against that, I would consider coming from poverty and a single parent home to get into Harvard and run for President to be pretty impressive.

Add in his abuse of the public's trust, his hot temper, and his inability to make a rational VP choice and you've gotta winner!

Ohhhh, of course! That puts a whole new light on it! Interesting observation.

17:04, thank you for making my point for me!
Obama's accomplishments...
Graduating from an Ivy League school and running for President...these are the accomplishments you can come up with, right? Shall we make a list of some of the people who can name those same "accomplishments?"
I love it!

I love it too! Others who graduated from Harvard and Princeton and ran for president:
* John Adams
* John Quincy Adams
* Theodore Roosevelt
* Franklin Roosevelt
* John Kennedy
* James Madison
*Woodrow Wilson

Your guy McCain, by the way, graduated 894th out of a class of 899. As for the accomplishments of Sarah Palin, well, inciting racist crowds, leaving a small town with 20 million in debt, inability to speak the English language, and preaching abstinence while her unmarried teenage daughter gets knocked up....

*gently steering back toward the topic*

I'm a staunch Obama supporter... have been since the beginning... I watched the debates, heard "that one" and didn't know I was supposed to be offended on Obama's behalf until I saw the next morning's news. My mind just heard it as "that guy". Completely unobjectionable to a midwestern ear. I think.

I'm a huge Obama supporter (and African American), and I've given this some thought. In the end, I don't think it was racism, I think McCain's just a cranky old guy who's thoroughly disgusted that a young whippersnapper like Obama is kicking his butt and who didn't show him the proper respect one Senator is expected to show another. Now his running mate (who McCain never ONCE mentioned, though he talked about Lieberman 3 or 4 times) is another matter. She's stirring up some quite ugly racism out there and it seems to be what she's been sent to do. I think the fact that McCain didn't bring up Ayers or Rezko shows that he just doesn't have the stomach to do it himself, although he'll allow his surrogates to do the dirty work.

McCain has been visibly and repeatedly disdainful and disrespectful to Obama throughout the campaign-- no eye contact in the last debate, nasty look when Obama greeted him in the Senate last week, challenging his patriotism and suggesting he's not a "real" American, to name just a few examples.

Totally agree with this. I'm a younger DCUM and didn't know much about McCain's history in regard to race/women/gays etc. Did some online research today and WOW! McCain's got quite a colorful history. Couldn't believe C*nt story. Or how about when he refers to the vietnamese as "gooks"?

Obviously McCain was coached not to be so nasty this time. But he can't hide his contempt for Obama. Which leaves me to wonder, is it Obama's credentials and experience he disdains? My radar tells me it's more than that. I think McCain resents having to acknowledge a negro as his rival, his equal in the polls and on the stage. My personal belief is that he is a racists and he resents having to hide it.

This is ridiculous, and I am an Obama supporter.

Which item(s) are ridiculous? Have you researched McCain's statements? Do you doubt that he called his wife a c*nt? Or that he referred to the Vietnamese as "gooks"? Otherwise, as I stated it's simply my opinion. Thank you for the insult.
Look it up.

"You people" are clearly not from the South! (Of course, neither is McCain, come to think of it.)

My parents, cousins, aunts/ uncles, friends, everyone I know says "that one," while pointing, all the time. It's not disrespectful at all; it's just a cute local saying that many people I know use a lot.

I think we need to lighten up here. There are plenty of things in this campaign to complain about. This issue is not one of them.

McCain is just a salty old patronizing man whose memory fails him. I don't think he meant it as a racist comment because I'm not even sure he's racist. There are plenty of things that are disturbing when it comes to McCain, but being a racist isn't one of them (in my opinion).

I sooo agree with you, second PP. First PP, I know you mean well and I sure hope McCain loses but you're not helping Obama by making statements like this. Please refrain!

Then again, "That One" is sort of small potatoes compared with all the vitriol currently spilling out of his mouth...
