I think PP meant the "adults hate kids" in general not the assault thing. Welcoming kids into society is definitely cultural. What culture adds to the invitation "adults only" or "adult reception"?

I married a man from a culture similar to PP and while they assume kids are welcome still I had to put in the invitation "kids welcome" because my guests assumed kids don't belong in weddings. What a shame!

Same here. Any function we attend, whether it be a wedding, baby shower, birthday party (for kids or adults), funeral, etc has kids and it would be downright weird if they were not invited. Everyone still has a good time, and we help each other out with the kids.

Kids are to be seen but never ever heard, I guess.

I'm not talking about tantrums in stores, just regular frustration where the kid could be redirected after a little bit of attention and reassurance. How hard is it to go over, give them a hug, acknowledge their frustration with whatever didn't go the way they wanted it to, and help them get interested in something else? Very, apparently.

Eh, I never leave my kid to cry, always go over to him, hug him, try to redirect him, but it doesn't help him to stop screaming. Some kids are just very persistent, to put it nicely. I also hate it when parents ignore their kids and don't try to help and redirect them, because I feel that it is mean to the child to not at least try, but helping, comforting and redirecting doesn't necessarily equate to no more screaming and yelling.
