Thanks to all for re-assuring comments. I have been worried sick since i took pregnancy tests days ago.
As i had to take ibuprofen regulary for 2 weeks for tooth pain during early pregnancy and had no idea i had been pregnant at the time. |
Apparently it's now associated with very early miscarriage. (I am newly pregnant and my kid is 3 - so much has changed!) But I took ibuprofen when I was pregnant with my 3 year old, no issues at all. |
Took it around nine weeks for pain after an ovarian cyst. Healthy baby nursing as I type.

i've been taking advil pm my whole pregnancy. And haven't missed a single prenatal visit. At every visit my ob and ultrasound doctor tells me my baby is fine and growing and developing well. everything is fine with him and i am now 32 weeks pregnant.
so i think you will be just fine as long as u dont over do it. |
This. My OB told me this as well. So OP, since you didn't go into labor while taking it, you are *fine*. For the record, I think I did take ibuprofen at least once in the first trimester and DS is 100% fine, if you just need to hear that too. |
| Yes, my OB told me I could use ibuprofen for up to 5 days, even in the second trimester when I had a specific issue. I used it with my first pregnancy and everything was fine. |
| I took once in my second preg and now (in my third) to treat a fever with the ob's permission. They said if under 20 weeks it's fine, bc of the heart issue previously mentioned. |
| It is a category B drug- I wouldn't waste any time worrying about it. |
I had surgery at 18 weeks pregnant. I was told by several doctors to take ibuprofen for the pain. |
| PP... Baby is 9 months and has no issues. |

My OB prescribed indocin, which is an NSAID, to stop pre-term contractions when terbutaline wasn't cutting it. It's not commonly used, but somewhat. What she told me was that NSAIDs are fine if taken before the third trimester for less than I forget how many hours consecutively - an OB would be able to tell you.
I will admit that reading the potential scare stuff on indocin after I took it unnerved me, but DD is doing great. She has low muscle tone, but as far as doctors can tell it's congenital. Despite her low tone she is developmentally on-track as can be. |
| 04/03/2014 09:41 here again - also baby aspirin is commonly given to mothers with a recurrent pregnancy loss history to prevent blood clot issues from causing miscarriage through 36 weeks. I know that's a lot lower dose than full-strength, but still. I was on that due to RPL for the first 12 weeks of my current pregnancy, which is now at 19 weeks. |
| I know this post was in 2011, but I wanted to ease the minds of other moms-to-be that may be in this same situation. I didn't know I was pregnant until I was 8 or 9 weeks, and I had dental surgery when I was 6 weeks pregnant and was put on a high dose of ibuprofen for about a week (maybe more) I was taking 2 extra strength ibuprofen every 4 hours for that week, then when I found out I was pregnant a couple weeks later I was absolutely mortified when I read everything online, I was so stressed and worried my entire pregnancy, also because I drank once unknowingly and went on a roller coaster, but mostly because of the ibuprofen. My baby is now 8 months old and she is fine!!! She's smart, strong, and absolutely healthy so far. Enjoy your pregnancy and have faith that everything will be ok! |
