1250 on SAT

I just went back and looked at her grades since freshman year, and I actually underestimated her grades.

In ninth grade, she had 3 A- and a B+ in math. (She also had an A+ in Art and an A in PE, but I assume those don’t count).

In 10th grade, she had a B+ in English, A in Chem, and A- in math, Spanish, and history. (again, As in art class plus physical education, but I assume those don’t count.)

It’s just 11th grade where the grades dropped – we haven’t received final grades yet but in her mid-year report card, she had two Bs, 2 B+, and one A-.

Very rigorous and well-regarded DC private school.

I appreciate all the suggestions. Some of these are already on her radar, but some are not, so it’s good to have other places to research.

"very rigorous and well-regarded DC private school" means all of those schools you listed in your OP are on the table. Haters will trash me for saying this and insist it's not true but it is. Those grades at a rigorous private are worth a lot.

This is very true for a truly elite private. But the low SAT score is inconsistent with the decent grades for a truly elite private.

As I said...

What SAT studying has the kid done and what math, English, and science classes are they taking this year?

These are smart suggestions.

At Tulane and Miami, applying ED and being full pay will help dramatically but I would not submit a 1250 to either.

Miami is test-required.

There are a ton of schools where those stats would get you in and may give you merit aid.

Might not be high profile or DCUM worthy but they are still solid.

Check out the Advice for awesomely average kids group on Facebook for some ideas.

Looking at UVM, Syracuse, Umass, Penn State, U Del plus some smaller schools which I won't mention as it sounds like she wants larger. If she's into STEM maybe RIT? Maybe Pitt, UConn, Ohio State, Minnesota, or University of Arizona?

Again, your child might have a stronger school/more rigor so maybe these would be more safeties?

This poster has many great suggestions, and the poster who suggested community college is unkind - unless your kid wants to start there, there is no need for her to do so with that profile.

Have you looked at the reddit thread on transfers? There's an entire set of people who do this on purpose. Also, if they are in VA, that first year of college might cost nothing.

Because she’s such a poor student? Never change DCUM!

Miami is NO LONGER test optional, you must report scores as of this recent application cycle. My DC got in with a 1450 and 3.8 UW GPA.

I believe Tulane is still TO.

At our private, CC would recommend ED Chicago test optional for this profile.

Miami of Ohio should be fine

Your daughter is a good student by any standard/metric. Ignore the haters. She has a lot of great options.

Agreed. My kid got into a T30 school with a non-submitted 1230.

If she doesn't mind cold weather, U Buffalo (SUNY) is good academically, has a great social scene, and the kids I know who have gone there have all been very happy. It's one of the two flagships SUNYs, and Buffalo is a nice city to be a college student in. It's not super selective, and I would think being out of state would give her an edge.
