?? People seem to agree that it is a sensible move for him based on his time in the job and the upcoming mayoral change. Not seeking where people are doing any "gymnastics" to diminish him, although a number of people here are (fairly, imho) unimpressed with his time at DCPS.

Not at all. He already has a job lined up. It was well planned.

He knew for awhile a new mayor meant he would be fired. At the debate all three candidates said they would not keep him. The chancellor is essentially a political appointee.

Whether he was good or bad, he wasn’t either, he was steady. Second longest serving chancellor after what three in three years? Mayor needed someone who would follow orders and be steady and controversy free. Nothing he did was particularly remarkable, good or bad. He wasn’t inspiring or controversial. He just…was.

Meh = bad. DCPS has real challenges. We needed someone courageous and capable, not milquetoast.

Being insipid enough to not get fired is not at win.

But the failure is really Bowser's. She chose not to hire a someone excellent, but instead simply wanted yes men, with the additional requirement that they be black males.

Please explain what is wrong with him being a qualified black male. Why are you people so bothered by DCPS being led by someone who looks like the majority of the kids enrolled? What is wrong with having someone who understands the culture of the majority of students enrolled? I highly doubt that someone from Wyoming would understand the culture of black students.

The culture in dc and only dc is garbage. Why pretend it isn’t? What good does that do? These kids are coddled and told their whole lives that the only work they need to do is bend over to get their butts kissed because of “systematic oppression” that oh by the way spends more on them in aggregate than many states (let alone per capita).

Just say that you’re racist at this point. It would save us all some time.

Yes please. $600,000 this year alone for a program riddled with scientific facts they haven’t fixed when shown them. Trash.

You mean the city council that passed the suspension limitations in 2018??

Did he mount an effective defense? Has he gone back with data to propose modifications?

EdReports gives Amplify strong reviews. 😧

Look I'm no huge fan of his, what data is he going to give that will overturn an anonymous law? Data that the council didn't already have access to as well as public comment period? Your comment is ridiculous and ignorant

He was always going to leave, but this shines a light on how important the next mayor will be in terms of setting the course for DC public education at a time when the AI vultures are working overtime to get their claws in.

Hope everyone is asking questions about the candidates’ approaches to AI in schools….

Ferebee was awful and it’s sad that we didn’t drive his failed self out sooner. Dcps is behind every single other school district here in the area. He single-handedly destroyed the crown jewel of dcps, Walls. He invested in Ed tech. I can go on but I’ll probably out myself at some point. I’m happy he’s gone and I hope the next one actually tries to improve dcps.

Meh doesn’t necessarily mean bad. We could get a leader who comes in like a bull in a china shop and makes things worse. Cleans house without knowing what works, brings in new programs, drops tons of new initiatives all at once. Stability is also important. I’m not a Ferebee fan but also don’t think he was awful.

Sure. But "could be worse" isn't a strategy of success.

Ferebee has made plenty of bad choices even with time to analyze first. (Amplify, anyone?) And he has failed to even make modest changes to things that are steadily and visibly worsening over time (eg, DCIAA).

He's really good about putting up new across-the-board barriers every time a problem arises, but not good at finding thoughtful, nuanced solutions. The list of these examples is long -- the ridiculous and very unreliable bus vendor situation, the overly drawn-out process for getting approval for out of state travel, bouncy, houses, etc., etc.

Failures in improving curriculum across dcps to meet modelen needs, failures to implement strong academic standards in communities that need it most.

Given the structure of the school system, couldn’t Bowser and Ferebee ignore the council if they wanted?

And get 0s for work they don’t do (instead of a 50).

Dream on!

It would be worthwhile at all these mayoral debates/forums/interviews for people to start asking the candidates what they will look for in their next chancellor. I’m not feeling optimistic, but would be useful to hear.
