Coworker got drunk and missed her presentation

This is insane in 2026. She should know better. Dont ever show your azz at a work event. You’re supposed to drink mocktails to keep your composure.

I don’t get this. The colleague showed up to the event the night before and then ghosted. Of course there was no back up plan besides someone else winging the slide deck. Do you all have understudies for everything?

Uh yes. It's called her assistant. She does a brilliant presentation. And then she gets her boss' job

Yeah this is just not how a lot of industries work at all. I don’t have an assistant.

Good point. Someone needs to have a delicate conversation with this employee, because if she was assaulted at a company event, she can sue the company.

Maybe she was exhausted from working alone on the presentation and having no support and 1-2 drinks were more impacted than she expected.

She got sick the next morning, who knows the reason. Maybe she had bad sushi.

A one time event is not fireable, and if she says she was sick she was sick. Unless she did something egregious the night before beyond appearing tipsy, there is nothing actionable here.

You just all be in some bs sales role because no one who does actual work operates like that. But you get paid well I bet, and the partying was the valuable bit.

I’m an attorney. We don’t have “backups.”

Everyone has an assistant, even if that's not the official title. I'm a senior manager, and I'm my Director's assustant. When she gets promoted (or too drunk to function), then I get her job

No but I would bet big money there is someone at your company that can run the charts and talk to the presentation. You don't need an assistant for this.

Someone could wing the presentation for me, but we don’t do contingency plans for no shows or emergencies. We’re expected not to have those, for better or worse.

I’m a senior associate. I have a part-time admin who I share with 8 other people and does nothing except book travel and submit receipts for reimbursement.

Yes, everyone gets a trophy these days, no?!

Fully agree. I would promote her to a level where her underlings can take care of this nonsense, and she can focus on bonding, building relationships with clients, and spreading good cheer.

This part feels like the MO of these events.

I agree with this. It happened to someone I know. He went to rehab and is still on the wagon. He does excellent work now. He did before, too, when he was sober/not hung over.
