How to handle insults of my kid’s college choice?

We don't particularly like southern states, OP, for the climate and their politics. Texas in particular is known to have completely toxic, batshit crazy politicians, such as the corrupt bully Paxton.

But my kids would not say that out loud to someone going to Texas or anywhere else they don't like. Your child's friend was rude.

There was a thread similar to this a few months ago about a kid who said "the only reason you got in is you are a legacy."

Some people have zero class. If you don't have anything nice to say, say nothing. The kid could have turned down a full ride to Harvard for Podunk State and to their face you should still act happy for them unless perhaps you have a very close relationship, which doesn't seem to be the case here.

It is like if you go to someone's home for a meal and it tastes disgusting - you still act gracious and try to eat as much as you can. This is Life 101.

Where is this kid going to school? Seems like a place I would want to avoid.

The kid stated that he would not want to live in the state of Texas and doesn't understand why your kid would.

This is not a college issue. This is a culture/political issue.

I know that I had concern last year about my daughter going to college in a red state when abortion bans were popping up.

I have these same issues. But if someone told me they had made a decision to go to a school in that state, I would keep my mouth shut and not question the decision. They are not changing the decision at this point so it is not a necessary comment. Particularly from someone you don't well. I have close friends who I would trust to make comments like that (though they too would probably make the comment when there was a chance to course correct). But randos like this just need to play along.

I'm not claiming that this classmate was in the right. I'm just clarifying for folks that this isn't somebody insulting the school. It isn't that different from somebody telling somebody going to Cornell that they couldn't go to school some place that cold....
