I get it and I don't. I understand that's your concern, but I don't understand why that's your concern. |
| As a HS teacher and coach I would be against pushing HS start times back if it meant school ran past 3 PM. It would create a nightmare for field usage if practices didn’t start until 3:30 or later. |
I just dropped warmups the past two days and have allowed students to finish independent tasks at home. |
I would love this and know of other districts that do this but it will never happen here. Collectively MCPS is too entrenched in the status quo and every time this comes up there are XYZ reasons about why it isn't feasible. |
Yes. Of course, we should prioritise sports over academics. That’s the American way. And your excuse is a red herring since myriad other states start sports later than MCPS and somehow manage just fine. Because they have more sensible HS start times |
At my HS we have some sports ending practice at 9:30 PM in order for everyone to get field time. If you want student athletes at practice until 10:30-11 thats on you |
Why is that the end all be all? I don’t have a problem with sports but ending elementary school at nearly 4pm is horrible. Many of these kids aren’t getting home until close to 5 with bus rides. Then they need to play when they get home but it’s almost dinner time, and many of these kids are still going to bed pretty early. The early years of adding in homework are particularly tough on that schedule. |
My 3rd grader ends school at 3:35pm. She gets plenty of playtime, sleep, and time to do homework. |
I’m so happy for you |
Not sure what you are arguing with. Where did I ever mention Elementary Schools would end later? My post is about HS and athletics. It never once brought Elementary school schedules into it. Besides, with after care a lot of those elementary school kids aren’t getting home until close to 6 anyway. |
- smaller districts - more land, more fields, more gym space. |
I might have misunderstood. It seemed you were saying high school schedules needed to be earlier, which I took to mean elementaries will need to stay how they are. I get that there are different priorities at play. That’s true about aftercare but many many kids do not do aftercare. It is also a scheduling option families can consider and reject. |
Why can't they practice in the morning? Kids who don't do sports would still be able to get a developmentally appropriate amount of sleep. |
Yep, there are field lights too! Share the fields, those who prioritize sports. |
I love AM workouts. My football players come in at quarter of 6 every morning almost all year. The only thing that concerns me with that being done on a school wide basis across multiple sports, is there are very limited shower spaces, some schools may not even have working showers. I don't mind a stinky kid but I'm sure a lot of other students would be upset sharing their classrooms with a ton of kids who ran sprints and lifted heavy for 90 minutes without a shower. |
