Bingo you have hit the mcps absurdity shady jackpot |
Not entirely true. I know a few kids got 240s map r and still invited to RMIB

Maybe high farms school? Our low farms school has really low rate of RM acceptance. |
FWIW, some students got in nothing with MAP M 280s and MAP R 250s
|
Two different types of HS programs and how admission decisions are determines — if the application is reviewed to determine selection (criteria based) vs a random selection (lottery based). |

Congrats! DC got in SMCS as well, MAP M 297

HS admission are school blind, but give bonus for personal adversity factors. Your low farms school has a low rate of acceptance because they have a low rate of students applying. |
If your kid can't even crack the top 10% to get screened, how do you think the magnet will help them? Everyone can get plenty of enrichment for free at Khan Academy. Free lessons, free homework, even free tutoring |
Your kid has visible talent and willingness to perform effort beyond what their school requires. We're saying that the system isn't fair to the kids who have only invisible talent and aren't willing to work beyond the school's bare minimum, but have parents who want the prestige of a magnet. |
I will give you hope. My DD did not do CES in ES, but did compacted Math. We did not apply for MS CES bc the school was scary but she was able to skip a grade. She applied for Poolesville SMCS and made it. She excelled and graduated in the top 1% with honors and went to the college of her choice. So, your son can try. |
Definitely not every child who got into a magnet program was in the 99th percentile-- there are like 800 kids a year who go to regional or countywide magnets-- but did your kid only apply for the very most selective ones? |
Not true. My kid got into CES with 52nd percentile thanks to school norming. They are now in 5th grade and the only MS with advanced English instruction is the Humanities Magnet. They will use CommonLit while every other MS uses CKLA with all kids in the same class. |
| Do you apply for criteria based? |
It is a school-blind process so that can’t be it. -DP |
