Pyle/whitman v maret

+1 lots of legacies. I wouldn’t pay 50k a year for an academic experience with peers who are less talented than the ones they would encounter in Pyle/whitman. That said, Maret is smaller and less academically rigorous so it would be easier to stand out there.

Curious for feedback about the social scene and what it might be like to join in middle school after not having gone to one of the feeder elementary schools.

I think you need to decide if you think MCPS will be suitable for your child, especially coming from whatever private you're currently enrolled in.
We switched from MCPS to private for one kid and I am having a hard time seeing how DC will go back to MCPS, even if we moved to a W cluster (which is a possibility that's on the table). It's just not the right environment for them.
Ultimately, ou know your child best. Visit the schools, talk to like-minded parents, and figure out which would be the best fit for your kid and your wallet.

As for the social scene, I'm unfamiliar with Maret, but at our private the new kids fit in easily and I haven't heard of other issues from friends that send their kids to other privates (Holton, Landon, Bullis, St. Andrews). Kids are pulled in from all over these days... the feeder schools really apply in the lower grades. Once you get to MS and HS, all bets are off and it's very competitive at all of the schools.

Thanks for this! I’m curious about what you mean specifically re: whether MCPS is a good fit. Who would you say it’s not a good fit for?

Not that poster, but it's not the best fit for introverts.

Maret has a talent for angering its surrounding community. It angered DC for a decade by taking the DC public Jelleff field for a pittance in a sketchy deal during peak hours because it didn’t have good athletic fields (preventing the $20mn investment DPR made once the field was finally unencumbered in 2024.)

And more recently it’s been fighting fighting with the people of Chevy Chase over its playing fields there.

You might want to wait until after the MCPS boundary study/vote is finished. One option moves Wood Acres kids to Westland for middle school and BCC for high school.

Personally I’d rather send my kid to BCC than Whitman although the differences are pretty small afaict (comparing our experience with my bff’s)

BCC has way higher FARMS than Whitman due to the Rosemary Hills kids

Yes and Whitman has way more kids driving brand new cars I wouldn’t even buy for myself. 🤷‍♀️

I am the poster who asked about Wood Acres and am unconcerned about the potential boundary change and do not want to derail OP's post with boundary debates.

So you responded to a thread about Pyle/Whitman and asked about Wood Acres but you don’t care if Wood Acres feeds to Pyle/Whitman or not?

For Wood Acres, there is one option out of several that shows a change in middle school and high school. It’s a fair point to note that there may be a change, but BHES could also change (understanding the latest options put it only at Pyle/Whitman). I wanted to note a different elementary school that historically and likely will go to Pyle/Whitman, since prior posters were helpful in discussing BHES.

Whitman and Pyle also have all the kids from the children's home on Greenacres who come from Baltimore or similar, for a safer life.

If you think that having your kid in school with kids that are poorer than they are will somehow harm them, you have bigger issues than DCUM can help you with.
