The Colonists won!
Who knew?!? |
| I love history so I’m into it. Like rewinding and relistening to key points into it. And for Matthew Rhys fans, he’s a great Thomas Paine. |
I agree it's often overlooked by the masses that the American Revolution pitted loyalists against revolutionaries while many were neutral. But it's not unknown, it's discussed in all serious histories and we talked about it when I was in HS 30 years ago. As for the rest of your post, I did raise an eyebrow. The loyalists were not kind to revolutionaries either. And ultimately one side won. |
| It's making me sad for our country. There was so much division and self serving attitudes. This is not the American history I learned in school. It's less pure and patriotic. |
That’s because the history you learned was propaganda bullshit. |
Oh, I recognize this language from the political forum, are you next going to call someone "scum" or zionist "filth"? |
No, but I will call you naive and somewhat pathetic. “Pure and Patriotic”. What a rube. |
Insults--so effective. |
Ha ha |
He's always slanted in a liberal way to get attention so we don't watch. ever |
So you would have preferred a more positive focus on England. The ungrateful colonists and all. |
I think it’s very timely, reminding us of the importance of what they did for us. And how it’s being ruined. |

I just finished the first episode and will continue watching. I'm fascinated by this time period. The story is certainly more complex than what I previously knew. And there are a lot of precursors to our modern situation already percolating, from what I can see. We really get a sanitized myth of our history.
Part of the problem for Ken Burns here is that PBS already did a fabulous multi-part documentary back in the '90s called Liberty! The American Revolution. It was done in a compelling if slightly simplified way and featured some nice period acting (including Philip Seymour Hoffman). So Burns couldn't do that again, but honestly, it stole a lot of the thunder of the huge American Revolution documentary, in my view. Because it's not like there is a "new angle" to be had 250 years on. |
| Finally finished it and gave to agree that it pales in comparison with his other works. Some of it couldn’t be helped because there just isn’t the same amount of imagery available. But also, the experts werent as compelling or passionate about their subjects, and the story dragged on too long. Less troop movements and more personal narratives would have helped immensely. |
Modern parallels exist. MAGAs are like the founding fathers and colonists who were rebelling against big government and wanted freedom. Democrats, RINOs and establishment corporations are like the loyalists who were loyal to the crown and big government. 40% of the population were neither, and just trying to exist among the ruckus or lived outside the law and civilization's rules. |
