It's definitely not a good thing... |
Do you have something against white people? |
Well, if you don’t like going to school with white people, you can hang around with the 10,000 undergraduates who are not white (30 percent of 34,500). |
| The city of Tuscaloosa is pretty much an even distribution of Black and White residents. |
+1 |
The state of Alabama is 63% white. The student body reflects the state’s population. |
Why would you not want only the best in medical schools? |
| My neighbors NMF kid went to UA undergrad (basically free), got into Duke for med school and is a doctor now. |
That is really surprising to me given that white students are only 50% of medical school students in the USA. |
| I mean, it’s Alabama. |
This. There will be some small print they aren't telling you about. |
| I mean, if a college was offering me free undergrad plus a $4k stipend every year, I'd at least go look. If you know you're headed to medical school, I'd save every dollar I could on undergrad. |
Some people have enough money that this isn’t a deciding factor. |
Agree. Everyone assumes paying for college and med school is not possible. For some families, it's a non-issue. |
Yes, we are all too aware of the Richie Rich type, but for someone who ISN"T, it's still an interesting proposition. I grew up next door in Georgia. Went to a top public high school where myself and many others were northern transplants. Still, the mega churches and conservative mindset could be pervasive, even in suburban Atlanta. I'd have to weigh that with not having a huge financial outlay for undergrad and giving kid great chance of debt free postdoc life. There is no right answer here. I have daughters and would hate to have them in Alabama if something came up where they needed good OB/GYN care. But I also know that there are great people fighting the good fight and SPLC is headquartered in Alabama. I could see justifying my DD going there pre-law to work on the ground with many of these institutions. She is T20 quality, but if she wanted professional school, I could make a case for the full ride. Smart kids succeed most places. |
