Uh, you need to read more. Oxy got an F from FIRE. https://www.thefire.org/colleges/occidental-college/free-speech-rankings

Lol, the fire. Seems totally unbiased.

“Woke” means not buying RWNJ bullcrap.

It is expensive and it is woke and it is mediocre. My DD's friend got in via the waitlist.

1-2 freshman per year attend with an SAT above 1550. That would make you a unicorn if you apply with those SAT's and give you a good chance of getting merit aid.

I didn’t read more and don’t need to because my kid didn’t like the tour… but not because of its wokeness or lack thereof.

We toured and were completely unimpressed by the student tour guides.

We absolutely loved the info session and the person who ran it was compelling, the campus is lovely, but our student tour guide was a bit underwhelming.

DS will apply.

I would avoid, especially if you are Jewish. Fourteen Jewish students have had to transfer since Oct 7 because of anti-semitism and protests on campus. There's a facebook page called "Occidental Parents against anti-semitism".

The Louis Brandeis Center and Arnold & Porter and the Deparment of Education filed a complaint against Oxy - here's the excerpt from the Brandeis Center's wiki page:

"Occidental College Lawsuit:

In April 2024, the Brandeis Center for Human Rights Under Law partnered with the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) to file a Title VI complaint against Occidental College with the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights. The complaint alleged that the college failed to address anti-Semitic incidents on campus, including harassment and bullying of Jewish students.

The case was resolved in November 2024 through a voluntary settlement agreement. Occidental College committed to several measures to address the concerns raised. These included revising its discrimination policies to provide explicit examples of antisemitic conduct, utilizing the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition of antisemitism, and implementing mandatory training for students and staff. The agreement also required expert-led training on discrimination against Jewish and Israeli students and emphasized inclusion of Jewish identities, including Zionism, in the college's broader efforts for diversity and inclusivity. These standards will remain in place through the 2025-2026 academic year, with regular reviews to ensure compliance.

Occidental College acknowledged the concerns raised by Jewish students and affirmed that antisemitism contradicts the institution’s values. This resolution is seen as a significant step in promoting a safer and more inclusive environment for Jewish students on campus."

Yet, students have continued to leave, the most recent, an Israeli student on scholarship for USC.

Here's an article on the first student departure. https://forward.com/news/574732/occidental-antisemitism-israel-palestine/.

My nephew is a junior and chose it for environmental science and marine bio! I think he's enjoying it so far. He's a nice, actually apolitical (registered as an independent) kid and most of his friends are STEM majors and are also not super politically active (other than voting). They don't discuss it much and just do normal college things, like hosting dorm parties, getting meals with each other, going to games and dance recitals and concerts on campus, doing research.

Oh, the anti-Zionism equals anti-semitism people are bringing a lawsuit, based upon inflated ADL hate crime stats and a definition of anti-semitism that includes criticism of Israel.

Of course, the linked article is from the Forward, a publication in the vanguard of defending Israel in the face of its genocide of Palestinians.

Make a point. This is just an article going over the same damn legal complaint from the same ideologically zionist institutions that can't handle that some California jews don't find genocide an appealing way to practice religion.

A simple Google search would show that this college is in trouble. The president, Tom Stritikis, announced in May that it has suffered a 15% enrollment decline. https://theoccidentalnews.com/news/2025/11/05/college-adjusts-spending-and-admissions-tactics-in-the-wake-of-enrollment-decline/2916071. This is what happens when you ignore the protests (happened yesterday at Oxy), 14 Jewish students feel obligated to leave, and your college now has a bad rap in the American Jewish community.
