I am so sick of government contractors hiring H1-B over US Citizens

At the federal agency where I work, more than 80% of the IT support staff are neither U.S. citizens nor permanent residents. Meanwhile, many recent U.S. citizen computer science graduates are struggling to find jobs, even though taxpayer money is funding these positions filled by H-1B workers. Please make it make sense to me.

Is this a troll post? EO 13940 issued during Trump 1 made it very hard to hire H1B applicants into federal contracting positions. The “immigrants are stealing our jobs” dog whistle is still a popular one and might be true in the fully private sector but what you claim hasn’t been possible for five years.

OP here. I am telling you that over 80% of the IT support staff at this federal agency are neither US Citizens nor Green card holders. I know this because they told me that they are neither US Citizens nor green card holder. Three people that work in my group are with a subcontractor for one of the above companies. They work on-site five days a week.

They're either breaking the law or contractors are allowed to hire visa holders.

Give me an ambitious competent immigrant instead! At my local hospital the black and brown staff where the ones who where doing all the work!

I don't think the typical h1 at tata is competent. They are just cheap.
Management has a temporary boost to cost KPI, with long term consequence.

You two are both correct - they are hungry to work and cheaper. Op is typical blame the others generation.

DP

I’m not one to typically blame others but when I see multiple people in my generation (45+) get laid off and become unemployed and unemployable it makes me wonder- and think there is more to it.

People doing low level IT work are the new factory workers in that it is cheaper to outsource the work. It is the reason that most top CS departments do not, and never did, focus on teaching IT or programming, but rather focus on science part of CS that will never be outsourced.

Unless you’re talking about Freddie/Fannie/Amtrak, this isn’t true and you’re just trying to stir up an anti-immigration discussion.

we have the requirement for US citizens on our contract otherwise we report them and they get banned or contract terminated. Report it to CO and IG line.

They need to stop hiring H-1s otherwise you can report them.

People work hard and pay taxes their entire lives just to have the rules changed on them so CEO bros can buy their 5th house or whatever, of course people are going to be PO'd about it.

I am a 2nd generation Indian and agrees with this. I wouldn't get a good job back in India so why can't they get it here so easily, especially in the Govt sector.

Go to the political forum and hunt down the long running H1B thread.

This is how it works: Once an individual (usually South Asian) is in a hiring position, they squeeze out the Americans and replace them with fellow South Asians. They make it hard for Americans to get hired, playing games with our legal job requirements. There is an entire industry built around bringing South Asians to the U.S. as H1Bs. There's a lot of corruption and scamming going on. The hiring managers (of South Asian origin) will tell HR that they require specific skills they can't find in the U.S., (thereby they clear the way to hire more H1Bs). It's all lies. They actively block Americans from getting the jobs. A lot of these H1Bs can't do the job they were hired for, because they lack the skills and the education. Often they make up credentials including educational background.

Meanwhile, American graduates are getting blocked from these jobs.

Ask your Congressmen why America is allowing the H1B factory to game the system. Vote accordingly in the future to replace these idiots who evidently think it's more worthwhile to support the H1B factory over American employees.

Tech ineptitude isn't just an Indian problem. The entire market overhired people that straight up have no idea what they are doing. Unfortunately management doesn't know how to tell the difference so good workers are getting dumped along with everyone else.

Trump literally said a few days ago that we need more h1b people because Americans are not talented enough.

Donald Trump: But you also do have to bring in talent.

LI: We have plenty of talented people here.

DT: No, you don’t, no you don’t. … You don’t have certain talents and people have to learn.

We're foreigners, and my husband worked for years as a government contractor. Never as an H1B, but an O1. He has an MD and a PhD. There aren't many around, OP. The only other MD/PhDs he knows are not American.

I suspect you might just be a xenophobic troll, but the reality is, there aren't enough qualified Americans to fill all these posts.

That's not important. Why would the Federal allow this in the first place? DoD requires that contractors have to be either US citizens or permanent residence.

Fed is blind to how their contractors operate. as long as the work is done they don't care.

They approve all the hires. It’s money.

I worked at a contractor, not on site at a federal department but the work done was exclusively for said federal client. H1Bs were common, even some working in non-technical roles like finance and project management.

I wish the government took into account that many roles that are not specialized are going to foreigners when there are so many a) recent grads and b) older employees who face discrimination, who can do this work.

Can I go to your country to find a 300k job? Can I find this job in India, China, Switzerland, or Italy?

What racist bullsh*t. This is not true. The stories I can tell about the h1-b hires and how little they do. Go read about Freddy and Fannie and what happened there. Go read the stats about who Indian managers hire.

It’s not racist to have misgivings about the long-term outcomes of continually outsourcing/off-shoring jobs once held by American citizens. I would feel this way if the common country/peoples were British, Sri Lankan, or Russian - or anyone else. It’s greed and it’s bad for everyday Americans.
