Is Environmental Science/Environmental Studies an oversubscribed major now?

No one cares. This is is just what fake ECs to do to game admissions.

Environmental science is not considered a STEM degree. At least not by employers who are looking for STEM majors.

What is the rationale for pretending that environmental science is not a STEM degree?

It can certainly mean something for college admissions, especially for those that admit by major.

Yale doesn't.

Wake up, people: every school cares about major, irrespective of whether they “admit by major.”

100% but people here are stubborn. Not our issue (did anyone listen to this week's The Game? All about the "worst major")

I mean, probably science fair (state level comp/award) if your project was environmental.

It doesn’t have to be exclusively environmental. You can still do other activities, varsity etc

That is much better for Geologists than EnviSci.

Wouldn’t AO smell kids genuine passion from a mile away or if the kid wanted to get in these major but later switch to another major if allowed?

Kids can have passion for multiple things. My older one applied successfully for one major…now it’s a minor with a more “practical” major.

It’s natural to switch. Schools expect you too.

They just want to see you have a passion for something and that you’ve done something with the passion.

The poster the person responded to was not talking about a kid’s true passion. It was about a manufactured one.

The only way AOs can smell anything is the family wealth. Spoiled brats will stick to art history upon graduation. Finance parent UMC kids with 100% genuine interest in comparative literature will declare major in Econ by sophomore. The only way prevents kids from switching is the weed out classes. This is the reason why many FGLI do not end up with a high income career.

There is an earth science Olympia competition for high school students.

At some colleges, geology is under the environmental science umbrella. The other three sub disciplines are ecology, hydrology, and atmosphere/weather.

I read that to be my kid has done all this. Should they be applying to competitions too and which ones?

Nothing wrong with that. I’ve asked similar questions for humanities competitions. My DD interest was still real and not negated because I asked for my suggestions here.
