Yes that’s exactly why we started and it was work at first, and still is, but it gets easier as you find a community and the benefits outweigh the headaches 10 fold. My early elementary kids are learning Latin, Spanish, English, actual history, math, reading, science, music, art, and still have half a day left to go play with friends or do other activities. They’re very happy with homeschooling and I hope they remain so for awhile, I don’t want to return to the every other day of the week off madness! |
+100. This year has been a disaster. I am not sure it can be defended by anyone but losers. |
On its own, no one would be mad about it. But when it comes on a string of endless 4 day weeks, we absolutely can be mad! |

No, sweeties, that's not why you chose to homeschool, stop lying. If you have the ability and capability to homeschool then you wouldn't have cared about random days off because you would have viewed them as another opportunity for learning and enrichment. I have a friend who is a former teacher and on these days off, she does a TON with her kids - she calls them "learning adventures" and takes time to help them with any work they need to catch up on as well. They do really interesting things and if it's a holiday it's usually about that holiday - I'm sure tomorrow if the government was not closed they would be going to the Marine Corps Museum or Museum of the Army or something like that. But I'm guessing you're not those types of people.... |
+2 The elementary school did an amazing job honoring veterans with a breakfast and programs that day. Parents, grandparents, etc were all welcome. It was a really nice way for kids to connect with veterans - particularly with their grandparents. |
| Another day to spend with your kids. The horror. |
It was nice but it was a wasted day educationally for some as well. |
Not at our school. It was an assembly and the rest of the day was normal classes. |
Why can't you just do it a day early? We had it today. |

I think the way some parents on this board complain, they'd prefer to have their kids in school at least six days per week, with no days off for holidays, teacher workdays, or foul weather. They also don't think they should have any responsibility for parenting, educating, or providing supplies for their children.
I'm not sure why some people had children since they complain endlessly about having to spend any time with them, including having any responsibility for supplementing education. |
There's always one. Today, she showed up late. Do tell us what you're doing with your kids tomorrow? Oh, that's right, you've already scheduled a full day of playdates. |
| Not every one has off. The kids will be latch key kids yet again. |
Not everyone has off on Sunday either, but here we are following a Christian school calendar for all kinds of people who don’t care about that. If we’re going to school on holidays for “other religions I don’t care about” then let’s go ahead and open on Christmas too. |
| I wrote a letter LOL. I mentioned that when FCPS had school on Veteran’s Day, veteran parents who had the day off could actually attend veteran events at the school. Now they hold veteran events on a separate day, which means certain parents have to take off work to attend. |
