Bowser could have stopped the East Wing demolition and chose not to

I wish she would take a page from Chicago's mayor and speak up for the people of DC.

DC is much more vulnerable to federal government action than Chicago. This Republican Congress already tried to cut $1.1 bn from DC's budget, which DC had tax revenue to fund. I'm no fan of Bowser, and think Trump's sudden destruction of the White House was crazy and wouldn't be surprised if it released asbestos particles and other contaminants into the air we breathe, but there's not much she could have done to stop him.

There's enough rich people in DC that she could make it up in taxes.

What's your evidence for that?

Red flags have been raised over asbestos and other potential health and safety risks during President Trump’s demolition of the White House’s East Wing.

“Federal law requires comprehensive asbestos inspection, notification, and abatement before any demolition,” the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization wrote in a press release last week. “No publicly available information demonstrates that these statutory obligations have been fulfilled.”

Maybe she couldn't have stopped him but it would've been nice to hear our leading saying SOMETHING to defend our city instead of hiding.

Would be even nicer if the POTUS wasn’t demented, power hungry and racist, but: hey. What sort of SOMETHING would you like to hear?

wtf are you talking about OP?

Not true. There was a big debate within the Bowser administration about this. Many were upset that Bowser chose to do nothing.

Please provide proof of this. Please also link to the laws which gives the Mayor an arguably degree of control.

The DC Mayor has zero control of what happens on WH property.

Are you REALLY surprised??

Exactly. This whole thread is ridiculous.

Asbestos causes cancer and when you raze a building full of asbestos, you scatter it into the air, exposing people all around. It's why we have lots and lots of regulations about it. It would have been great if Bowser could have at least warned the public about this. But that would have required her to admit she allowing Trump to ignore her regulations, so she chose to stay silent.

The White House is subject to the city's environmental regulations. You think the administration can just do anything it wants? You think they could set up an oil refinery on the South Lawn and no one could say boo?

LOL, how was she going to do that?

I'd love to see them try.

Federal enclaves are exempt from any local regulations. Yeah, they could.

At least Democrats in Congress are on the case, even if Bowser is cowering in a corner somewhere.

Senators, advocates demand explanation on asbestos risks from East Wing

The White House said it had mitigated risks associated with the building material, which was widely used at the time of the East Wing’s construction and can be hazardous.

Updated October 30, 2025

By Dan Diamond and Olivia George

Democratic senators and public health advocates are demanding that the White House and its contractors prove their rapid demolition of the East Wing last week did not expose workers and passersby to asbestos, a construction material that has been linked to cancer and lung disease...

“Construction workers on the East Wing site, nearby office workers and tourists, and passersby could now be at heightened risk of developing lung cancer, asbestosis, or mesothelioma from the inhalation of demolition dust,” Sen. Edward J. Markey (D-Massachusetts) wrote in a letter Thursday to ACECO, the contractor handling demolition of the White House annex.

Oh stop. Even Bowser's own advisers are pissed she's looking the other way on this.

Trump ran rough shod over the Arts Commission responsible for overseeing plans for renovation. They did even have time to consider anything, the wing was already demolished. Trump has done many, many illegal things while in office. People are in triage mode. The courts are overwhelmed with cases against him. Which was the entire point of Project 2025.

Also, and I cannot emphasize this enough: Bowser needs to work with this guy until 2028, or until he pops off. She is being very careful in what she pushes back against. DC residents would NOT benefit from an all-out war with the White House.

Bowser doesn't stand up for anything, ever. She is afraid of her own shadow.

Why don't you blame lame spineless gop in Congress instead? They can stand up to that "shoot someone on 5th and get away with it" ass

Is it because they’re excellent muni lawyers, or because they’re dumb and angry?
