School for kid and who’s not that smart?

I mean - the usual Field/Burke/Sandy Spring/Bullis loop, minus the commute.

It sounds like you want a school that focuses on whole child, not just academics, and is willing to meet kids where they are re: interests and engagement. That might be a better spin for you

And I’m not trying to get anyone to sell their school short, but the problem isn’t going to be fixed with better teachers or different motivation, which I think some parents suggest when they say they have a B/C student. Happy to have my kid boost the curve for others!
And, finally, I’d love it if Burke would work. I just worry about sending her to a bunch of school visits if she honestly has no shot.

OP, if she has an IEP for math then there is a specific LD right? I would get to the bottom of that. If you’re hoping for Burke or other mainstream privates, but are concerned about her feelings, I would do some of those open houses on your own, without her. Collect the information and get app materials ready without her. She only has to be involved for the interviews and any required testing. You can have conversations with admissions without her too, so you can assess the likelihood of admission independently. Then you can present it all to her carefully, in a way that doesn’t get her hopes up too much, or get her too attached to a specific school.

Oops, I see this is for 9th gr admission. She’d have to write the essay, take HSPT or other required testing, and interview. But you can still do preliminary research and open houses without her, so you can lay the groundwork and have some conversations with admissions to figure out likelihood of admission. And absolutely focus on her strengths when talking with admissions people.

We’re trying to figure out whether there are any schools who would take a kid who would likely be a B/C student and is not an athlete. We live in Alexandria.

If you can handle the commute, St Andrew's Episcopal in Potomac is a good option for an average student.

Sarcasm???

There's nothing about OP's description that screams Holton Arms.

But with no other info, it doesn’t hurt to apply broadly to schools a tier below the top. Look at FH, SSSAS, Ireton, O’Connell for example. All solid schools.

What do “FH” and “SSSAS” stand for?

9th grade admissions are quite competitive, but it doesn’t hurt to look into it.

Maret will be a good fit.

Agree about Bullis. Pretty light on HW and easy on grading. You can get unlimited time on tests even if that helps you. Lots of fun things too! Very chill.
