+10000 I’ve been saying this for years. Either put down the correct hours, or stop doing all the extra work. |
It's called "spaced repetition" and necessary for development of skills and thinking. Can you imagine how many kids would prepare for class if we followed your advice?
|
You haven't been to college recently... yes, it is like that. |
😂😂😂Kids grades would absolutely fall off the cliff. Can you imagine these kids and parents if they had 5 assignments per quarter? A)They wouldn’t be able to pass anything because they would have retained nothing, and B) There would be no assignments for them to make up any low grades. This would require a whole educational and culture shift. It’s needed, but until I see real commitment to actually meaningfully changing US education or at least the whole of MCPS, I would not suggest limiting assignments. |
| Hate to be this guy but I enjoy doing the extra things. I am new at this so I make sure I spend time outside of work reading the books ahead or on pace with the class. I create videos of read alouds of the books and summarizing the events. I write sample papers where I provide details of everything that is expected so my students have accurate modeling. Yeah it takes me a few hours every day/ week but ultimately if it improves my work and helps my students then I don’t mind doing it. |
The repetition isn't spaced, doofus. |
Publish that stuff online and you'll be a millionaire. |
The teachers can't even manage it! And the kids have up to 8 teachers to deal with! |
Well, I can see that your education should definitely be replicated by the school district! |
Wow - the daintiness of kids these days. Imagine that somehow, for decades, kids have figured it out... and had to deal with the consequences of real grades. I think it is mom and dad who don't have the margin, and who overbook their kids in activities. |
| If you want less graded assignments, the best thing to do is to bring back midterms and final exams. These should count for 50% of the grade for the semester. |
I agree with having finals and fewer busywork assignments. I think there'd be revolt at 50% of the grade, but it could still be done and would hopefully reduce the tedious time-consuming grading workload for teachers too. |
I agree. MCPS grads regularly cite lack of final exams as the area where they could have been better prepared for college. I'd also like to see a sliding scale introduced on homework. It should count for more in MS and 9th grade and taper to less in 12th grade. This would give younger students an incentive to build good study habits. |

I want to say when i attended MCPS high school in the early 2000s the semester grade was like 40% MP1 40% MP2 20% Final exam.
Although i dont believe they used the actual scores so it was likely some weird formula using only letter grades |
