Future Northwood parents, time to organize

Anonymous
I received the following message on a neighborhood listserv:

"The PTSA leadership has been very welcoming of potential future Northwood families and supporters of Northwood. Their email address is ptsa.northwoodhighschool@gmail.com. They also have a listserv you can request to join by emailing list+subscribe@northwoodptsa.groups.io. Finally, they shared with me (as did a SS parent below) the survey below, which provides current and future Northwood families with an opportunity to weigh in on some of these changes as well as self-identify if you are interested in advocating on behalf of Northwood."

I hesitate to share the survey itself on a public board like this, but I imagine if you email the ptsa.northwoodhighschool@gmail.com address and/or subscribe to the listserv you can get access

Northwood PTSA here. We welcome input from all stakeholders, including future Gladiator families and concerned community members. We are coordinating advocacy efforts to ensure that Northwood is fairly considered as an equal member of the Regional programming.

BOE just added criteria-based theater back to Northwood. No STEM criteria-based added back. So half victory?

Crazy the flip flop.

MCPS isn't thinking this out at all. Its crazy that there is no stem between Einstein and Northwood and those kids are going to miss out like they currently do.

+1 they seem to have no idea of the differences in course offerings among different schools

Theatre should be at Einstein.

There should be theatre and advanced STEM at every school

But why? I have a child who wants to join the Law Academy at Northwood. When my oldest attended Northwood, the arts program wasn’t that prominent. I fully support Einstein having the Performing Arts Magnet — that’s what the school is known for. However, the real issue is that the county seems unwilling to give Northwood the Humanities program because they don’t view our students as thinkers, future lawmakers, or leaders. A Humanities program could benefit Northwood tremendously, but instead, they’re giving both of our academy programs to the “W” schools.

You are out of the loop. Northwood theater has become a highly regarded program since Mr. Harwood took over. Sadly, Einstein’s program is on the decline after Mr. Smealie retired. Northwood did unedited Rent and Antigone (as in Sophocles Greek tragedy) last year and they were fantastic. They did that without an auditorium which is even more impressive.

Northwood parents are absolutely fighting for that theater program.

Your one sided beef with Einstein is odd.

Theater makes sense at Northwood because it will have modern facilities - dance studios, a very modern auditorium, etc. The facility plans for Northwood are not quite as arts-intensive as the Woodward building, but aren't far off.

They should also put a downcounty environmental program there. The building will be LEED-certified so you could have electives about sustainable design.

Please stop posting this misinformation. They may not have as many STEM classes as other schools, but it's just false to stay there is no STEM.

Seriously. How can you even begin to say Einstein's theater program is "on the decline" after Mr. Smealie's retirement, when they haven't yet performed a single show under the new director?

I mean, yeah, props to Northwood for making some theater magic in a crappy situation, but repeatedly bashing other programs is weird. Somebody has a real burr under their saddle.

put advanced classes and many electives at all schools, end consortia and magnets. spend money on home schools which is where 90% of students go. excepting CTE. if another we could end the magnets and add another CTE school

Please share with us how much stem is there.

There is up to calc bc, two engineering classes taught at the same time and two computer science. There are no AP science classes. It is bare bones. Compare it to other schools.

The new director is putting a lot of energy and trying hard. It doesn't make sense to seperate music and theater as Einstein and other schools put on a musical that requires both to be in it.
