So you think the House will return to work and actually get something done that quickly? They've been home on vacation for a few weeks now.

I think once people see how much their premiums are going up, the pressure will ratchet up on house republicans.

+1.

And you can use the two year money trick once or twice (?), but that doesn't last forever. Is all of DOD being paid or just active duty?

Add in travel disruptions and the media needing a new story after the Israel/Gaza peace plan news settles down and I think pressure starts ratcheting up. How long does Mike Johnson get to keep the House out of session without it being the front page story on every newspaper/website?

What would Trump’s motivation be for reopening? The shutdown gives him cover to fire government workers. He’s not running for reelection. At this point he does whatever he wants then let the courts work it out. The Democrats fold first.

Having the government open didn’t stop him from firing people.

I just perused Apple News and NYT.

Not ONE mention of the shutdown. Feds are forgotten. Godspeed.

My retired parents just got their Medicare premium increase amount and it was only $20 (not sure if that’s monthly or biweekly). They were pleased with the amount and thought democrats were protesting too much.

You do realize that Medicare is a completely separate program and has nothing to do with the shutdown - right??

Fed here- thanks but of course I do.

I was responding to the pp saying that people will be upset about premium increases…

This is why we are in trouble as a country….

It’s sad that neither you nor your parents know the difference between the ACA and Medicare.

Maybe Feds should play the prediction market?

https://kalshi.com/markets/kxgovshutlength/days-of-government-shutdown

If you bet for a long shutdown, you can earn money to cover your rent if it does stay shutdown. If it end, you lose the bet but have income coming in.

I’m starting to think this too. We’re inching closer to Nov 1 and nothing has changed, therefore Dems haven’t moved the needle on premiums and open season will be here in two weeks. Meanwhile, Trump is destroying the govt under the guise of the shutdown. Dems will need to accept the original offer to work out subsidies after the govt reopens. They’ve gained nothing from this-the premium rates are already going out to ppl. If anything they can say told you so.

Op here. Thanks all. We’re okay (savings / husbands job), but I just learned our state doesn’t pay unemployment benefits to exempt employees. You’re only considered unemployed if you’re not working - and being exempt apparently counts as working even though you’re not paid.

Although I didn’t need it, I’m tempted to take this up with my rep!

+1

+2 If the Republicans were serious about passing a CR and negotiating the ACA subsidies later, then they would start negotiating at least by Nov 1st.

Why do you think they are serious about negotiating later if they won't do it now?

when would they find that out, though? Does ACA send out letters? (honest questions)

They have to sign back up during open enrollment like everyone else in November. So they’ll see that their premium has doubled/tripled.
