Ok? And what if they did not have a car? Kids don’t need internships at 16. |
They cannot get their license at 16. And, they are 16 regardless of their grade. Driving sophomore vs junior year makes no difference. |
| Do not send a 4 year old to K, just don't do it. Especially a boy. There will be many boys in the grade with July, August, September birthdays from the year before. Do you want your 17 year old starting college with 19 year olds? |
They are turning 5 within weeks. And, they are 18 in college. You don’t want an 18 year old their entire senior year. |
Why not? I can tell you as a professor I don't want a 17-year-old college freshman (or one 5 minutes past their 18th birthday) who isn't absolutely extraordinary in their maturity. Several months of growth and experience may not matter as radically in the later teens as they do in the preschool years - but they do still matter. |
Agree. Given how many summer birthdays are held back here (which is not possible in DCPS, where OP Is coming from), OP’s kid would be 15 months away from the oldest in the class — possibly more. OP will regret sending the kid early by middle school. |

We moved our kids to MCPS when they were both starting 3rd grade. At that stage, it is automatic, no matter where you have come from inside the US.
Its only K-2 that sometimes requires testing if there's any question around the birthdays. My DD had completely skipped 1st grade, going from a California public K class to a private 2nd grade class, so when she got to MCPS she was ready for 3rd and it wasn't questioned. |
Maybe you are the problem, not the student. This makes no sense. |
How many summer birthdays do you know are held back? I only know of one and there were other real issues not age as the factor. |
In MCPS, kids who have finished first grade will automatically go to second. It’s only K-1 that require assessments if they do not meet the age deadline. |
Success in college isn’t about age. It’s about maturity and readiness. My 17 year old is doing amazing. She is bright, confident, self assured, motivated and a go getter. And my 23 year old wasn’t successful until he hit 23, not because he isn’t bright - he’s far smarter than his sister. But he lacked the social and emotional intelligence to be successful. |
If you are coming from a public school system and have already completed K, they will put you in 1st as a transfer. |
In our school (BCC pyramid), most summer boys are redshirted. For girls they are a mix. |
DP - but if you have completed K in a public school system, you don’t need to test into 1st. Private or homeschool you would. |
Jesus, this is how educator gets dispelled these days. A K-12 teacher, a university professor, and a parent with their first-hand experience shared their general observations from a group of samples (the former two has a large group of samples), and you can just use your own outlier example to call others a problem. If your kid is a true outlier, I feel sorry for them with an arrogant parent. If your kid is not, then good work, mirror mirror on the wall. |
