HUGE problem!I know there is a teaching shortage but there must be some standards. Unfortunately, historically teachers have come from the bottom 50% of their high school class. Maybe that's changed somewhat. Its not to say that there are not some very smart people who are teaching but all of this online stuff has just made things worse in terms of teacher quality. I'll never forget one of my science teachers in high school telling people that she went into teaching because she got divorced and getting a teaching degree was the easiest thing she could do to start earning a living.

Then start paying to reflect the type of "standards" you are expecting. And it CAN be the easiest thing to do to earn a living especially if she has school aged children because she doesnt have to worry about summers but also easy to start and easy to perform/excel are different.

I think the comment was more about the sketchy master's and doctorate degrees many in MCPS seem to acquire from places like Walden University.

The comment sounded elitist and suggest that there are not a wealth of schools in the county that can provide people with quality education. Looking at the list I see no problem with where people went to school. I also have no problem with the salaries. These people are taking on a lot of responsibility and management, regardless that’s its public service. Not sure why people feel public service and nonprofit personnel should work for low salaries.

I’m a teacher in MCPS and I agree with this. And don’t get me started about all the administrators with online doctorates in education- eye roll

At one school a few teachers got their online doctorates and they were with the fake schools.

As a teacher it’s so perplexing to watch our administrators fall for fads and hucksters, losing sight of what really matters while they pursue the latest data point. I do sometimes conclude that they’re just not that smart. The Peter Principle in action.

Salaries don’t seem that high to be honest. I don’t think I’d take a job as a principal for ~190k.

I don't think the principals salaries are the ones people are balking at. It's the chiefs who, seemingly get paid to know nothing and do nothing.

They literally do nothing all day, except plan their next junket (read free vacations) and where to job hop to next. Total scam. And this wage list is very misleading. Add up all the perks and it's much, much higher; ex. pension, annuity, life insurance, car allowance, travel allowance, free master's and Ed.D. tuition reimbursement, etc, etc. And when or if they screw up, they get a golden parachute to leave.
