Wouldn't most of the kids coming in with Algebra I in the old system take RS1 and TJ Math 1, and then not be eligible to take the geometry SOL since they only finished half of geometry?

For the class of 2025, it is known that 161 students were admitted with only Algebra I. Most of those aren't appearing anywhere in the SOL data for their 9th grade year.

Before when it was merit admission there were under 20 Algebra 1 students, and now with essay based admissions it's 161 students?

The fact that you are showing 42 TJ students taking the Algebra SOL in the class of 2025, when completion of algebra is a prerequisite for admission to TJ, should be an indication that something is amiss here.

I ran the SOL numbers for TJ a few days ago and was surprised to see Algebra 1 test results for the school, it didn’t make sense to me. I run pretty simple tables. I chose:

1) School (FCPS, TJ)
2) 9th grade (I wanted to see the break down of Geometry, to Algebra 2. I understand that the kids don’t have to take the SOL but most will take one as freshmen since there is a requirement to sit a SOL in HS)
3) EOC/Mathematics/All

There were reported scores for Algebra 1, which surprised me.

Alright, the report ran.

It lists under 10 kids taking Algebra 1, 273 took Algebra II, and 28 taking geometry.

Thank you for this. This is of course a much better characterization, for the majority of non-SOL-taking freshmen, than that they are in precalculus or beyond.

The SOL numbers do not bare this out. Only 28 students took the Geometry SOL last year. There are three explanations.

1) A lot of students chose not to take the SOL
2) A lot of students transferred back to their base school
3) Fewer then 161 students with Algebra 1 were admitted.

I am guessing that it is a combo of 2 and 3 but that the number of students selected with Algebra 1 was closer to 50.

Even though Algebra I Honors is a prerequisite to get in that doesn’t mean that all of the students that were admitted did well in Algebra I. It appears that many students had to retake Algebra I in 9th grade.

You really don't know what you're talking about, do you?

TJ has a minimum GPA requirement for applicants. A student who did badly enough in algebra to need to retake it would almost certainly be below that threshold.

Also, TJ doesn't offer Algebra. Are you suggesting that these students retook it elsewhere?

Of course I know what I’m talking about. The 3.5 GPA requirement is only for 7th grade and the first grading period of 8th grade. A student could do poorly after the first grading period and wouldn’t have their admissions recinded.

I understand that TJ doesn’t have Algebra I in the course catalog, but that doesn’t mean that they couldn’t add an Algebra I class for students that needed to retake it. You’re allowed to expunge any courses that you take in middle school.

NP. At least the one PP was transparent about both data source and analysis -- and was using an official data source (meaning the cited data very very likely is correct). All of that is a whole lot better than typical claims on DCUM.

One can believe the analysis or not, but either way that PP's claims are much better supported than most claims on DCUM.
